How is the inauguration of a president in Brazil? The change of president takes place on 1 January every four years. The inauguration is a day of celebration in Brazil, with an elaborate ceremony in the capital Brasília. During Sunday’s commemoration, up to 300,000 spectators are expected. The highlight of such a ceremony is the outgoing president taking off his banner and handing it to his successor. Jair Bolsonaro delivers his last speech as president of Brazil. Outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro lost the election on 30 October. But he has not declared defeat, and he has not congratulated the election’s winner, Lula da Silva. Bolsonaro will therefore not present the presidential banner. And he will not be present during Sunday’s ceremony. Yesterday he gave a farewell speech on the internet to his followers. He then got on a plane to the United States, where he will spend the New Year’s weekend and the next few weeks. Can Bolsonaro’s supporters make noise? Sunday’s presidential change takes place amid a huge security buildup. Supporters of Jair Bolsonaro have carried out violent actions in the capital Brasília, and several have now been arrested. According to Brazilian media, the outgoing president lives in great fear of being imprisoned. When he resigns, he no longer has any legal immunity. This means that he can be summoned for questioning about his behavior as president. Bolsonaro flirted with Lula when he was in prison. After the change of power, he himself fears that he will end up behind bars. A parliamentary commission believes his government is responsible for the deaths of tens of thousands of people. What does this Sunday mean for Lula? For Brazil’s next president, Lula da Silva, Sunday’s ceremony is a huge triumph. In 2018, he was imprisoned for corruption. Few believed that he would return as a politician. But the sentences were later overturned. Lula was Brazil’s leader for two terms, from 2003 to 2011. Now he is embarking on his third term as president. He will lead a centre-left government with 37 ministers. Among them is Environment Minister Marina Silva, whom many Norwegians know from Lula’s first government. What will be the most important tasks for the Lula government? The fight against hunger and poverty is a key issue for the incoming president. The situation in Brazil has deteriorated sharply in recent years. Lula da Silva together with incoming Environment Minister Marina Silva. Brazil is a country with great social differences and these are matters of the heart for Lula’s workers’ party PT. Probably the most important issue, seen from a Norwegian point of view, is the fight to save the rainforest in the Amazon. Under the Bolsonaro government, deforestation has increased by over 70 percent, and Lula has promised to reverse this trend.
