Experts believe new research will give more corona vaccinated people compensation for delayed injuries – news Vestland

– I think that in the future we will get more answers to what could be side effects that can be explained as having a connection with the corona vaccine. Then I get to learn from it. Then we will see if we should reopen old refusals because new knowledge suggests that there is still a connection. That’s according to department director Anne-Mette Gulaker in Norwegian Patient Injury Compensation (NPE). They have given more than twice as many refusals as support to people who have applied for compensation for short-term or long-term side effects after corona vaccination. New research may change that statistic. – Then the situation may change, but I don’t know that now. The most important thing we must assess is whether it is possible to explain from medical and biological knowledge that the vaccine may have caused these types of problems, says Gulaker. Senior adviser Pernille Harg at the Norwegian Medicines Agency also expects that more side effects will be scientifically proven. – I consider it likely that new side effect problems may still appear, perhaps especially for long-term ailments. Anne-Mette Gulaker in Norwegian Patient Damage Compensation expects that several side effects of the corona vaccine will be scientifically proven and thus give the right to compensation. Photo: NPE Compensation for side effects after the corona vaccine 1,573 people in Norway have applied for compensation due to side effects/late injuries after the corona vaccine, according to Norwegian Patient Injury Compensation as of 1 October 2023. 321 of them have received a total of NOK 15 million in compensation. 694 have been refused. The rest of the applications are unprocessed or withdrawn. There is a big difference in how long it takes before you get a response to the compensation application. Cases of menstrual disturbances/bleeding in the lower abdomen go quickly, perhaps in just a couple of months. Difficult assessments take a year or more. The amount of compensation also varies greatly. The rules in the law say that you must first and foremost get the loss and expenses you have incurred as a result of an injury covered. Many have received a few thousand kroner to cover the increased need for pads in the event of menstrual disorders. It can also mean compensation for lost income now and in the future. In addition, you can also receive compensation for lost quality of life. In serious cases, for example if a young dependent has lost his life, the amount of compensation can be very large. I would say that is a good arrangement. The challenge with corona vaccines is that there is still a lot of research into side effects. In total, healthcare personnel or patients have reported over 8,000 cases of suspected serious side effects after corona vaccination in Norway. – Fortunately, some of the cases have gone well, so that it may not be relevant to apply for compensation, says Gulaker. 1,573 Norwegians vaccinated against corona have applied for compensation for long- or short-term side effects. So far, 321 have been approved and 694 refused. Photo: Morten Waagø / news Some key figures about corona and corona vaccine Since the start of the corona pandemic: 6,152 corona-related deaths in Norway have been registered, according to the Norwegian Institute of Public Health (FHI) on 7 December 2023. This corresponds to about 1.1 per thousand of the country’s population. 272 deaths that may have been related to the corona vaccine have been reported, according to the Norwegian Medicines Agency on 21 September 2023. Coincidence in time need not mean that the vaccine was the cause. About. 4.35 million Norwegians have taken at least one vaccine dose. 4.0 million have taken two doses. 3.0 million have taken three doses. 8,052 cases of suspected possible serious side effects of the corona vaccine have been reported, according to the Swedish Medicines Agency on 21 September 2023. This corresponds to approximately 1.9 per thousand of the vaccinated and 1.5 per thousand of the population in the country. 1,573 people have applied for compensation due to side effects/late injuries after the corona vaccine, according to Norwegian Patient Injury Compensation as of 1 October 2023. 321 of them have received a total of NOK 15 million in compensation. 694 have been refused. The rest of the applications are unprocessed or withdrawn. Support association news told last week about the newly established support association VaxVeritas for corona vaccine victims, which Karl-Erik Hordnes has taken the initiative for. He called the assurances from the governing authorities that the corona vaccine is safe and effective a mockery of those who have sustained damage. – The lack of follow-up from health authorities, and the lack of recognition through patient compensation, is a complete scandal and a huge abdication of responsibility, he said. Karl-Erik Hordnes is 60 percent off sick leave since he took the corona vaccine two years ago. He has started the support association VaxVeritas. Photo: Leif Rune Løland / news State Secretary Ole Henrik Krat Bjørkholdt assured that both the Ministry of Health and the rest of Health Norway take and will take vaccine injury seriously. – But a requirement to receive compensation is that you can show a probable connection, he said. – Trivialised Assessments of patient compensation are largely based on what the Norwegian Medicines Agency has said about probable causal relationships in general. – If they say that there is a causal connection, then it is of course very interesting for us. But we also assess the individual case completely individually, even if the Norwegian Medicines Agency has not concluded one way or the other, says Gulaker. – Open about side effects The latest report from the Norwegian Medicines Agency on side effects after the corona vaccine is from 21 September. The most common reason people receive compensation is menstrual disorders. Among other delayed injuries where the corona vaccine has been shown to be a documented possible cause are myocarditis and pericarditis. For conditions such as ME, MS or long-term headaches, there is no scientifically proven connection with the corona vaccine. – We are still working on those types of issues by looking at how it looks over time, says Harg of the Norwegian Medicines Agency. She refers to the Norwegian Institute of Public Health’s extensive population surveys. Harg denies that the long-term side effects of the corona vaccine have been under-communicated by the governing authorities. – Ever since the vaccines were put into use, the Norwegian Medicines Agency has informed us about all the reports we have received about suspected side effects. We have followed this vaccination very closely from the start to pick up signals about new side effects, and we continue to do so. Pernille Harg in the Norwegian Medicines Agency says very many people have to use a medicine before rare side effects can be scientifically proven. Photo: Caroline Roka – Not “experimental animals” She says it is difficult to establish whether there is a causal relationship or not. – There are quite complex issues to figure out. Among other things, because most people in Norway are vaccinated, so we have few to compare with. At the same time, the vast majority of them have also had covid disease – including the vaccinated. And covid disease can also cause this type of long-term symptom. – Were the corona vaccines developed and put into use so quickly that the vaccinated were in practice “experimental animals” because the vaccines were not tested enough in advance? – No. I think safety was safeguarded as far as possible. But it is the case with medicine that it will always be possible that rare new things can occur. – We will only be able to see rare side effects when many people have used the medicine, says Harg.
