Troubled crow, rebel, “bad guy” and asshole. All the words have been used to describe Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios. The 27-year-old has had a turbulent tennis life, to say the least. Sporting, as well as non-sporting scandals, have characterized large parts of the career of the outgoing tennis player. Despite his enormous talent, he has been written off and separated up to several times. But this year, the whistle has taken on a different sound. Now several critics have turned their backs on Kyrgios. – He has never been better, concludes tennis expert Christer Francke to news. Since losing to Novak Djokovic in the final at Wimbledon, the tournament that really became the big breakthrough for the Australian, he has won the ATP 500 tournament in Washington and lost only two singles matches in 17 attempts. The one defeat came in the quarter-finals of the ATP 1000 tournament in Montreal against Hubert Hurkacz. Two rounds before, he knocked out world number one Daniil Medvedev. – If he keeps it up, he will quickly become a top ten player, he is good enough for that. He will surely win a Grand Slam one day and is good enough to be number one in the world. Whether he can bear to play so much week in and week out remains to be seen, says Francke. Kyrgios has previously pointed out that the varying performances are due to a lack of motivation and that he has not been “hungry enough”. Now he thanks his girlfriend for the career transformation. – I have a partner with me now with whom I see a future and who I have to take care of. It has clearly had an effect. – I have the best boyfriend in the world. I just have so many people around me, they just support me. She’s been a big part of my development,” Kyrgios said, according to Australian Who. The 27-year-old has no head coach and has had his family as his closest support device on match days. Francke believes this has been a recipe for success. – He has a team around him with dad and girlfriend. He seems calmer, he doesn’t go to war with the media and people as much. They have drawn him back to training and being more serious – more positive in life. There is a more harmonious Kyrgios today compared to a year ago. – Modern day John McEnroe Kyrgios is known for being a player who has let a bullet go hot during matches. Over the years, he has received fines for, among other things, breaking his rackets and acting out against the referee on several occasions. The tennis circus’s opinions about Kyrgios are divided. – I think it’s good that there are players who are slightly outside of A4. Those who manage to get out of the box, without being unsporting. He is a modern John McEnroe, says expert Francke. Norway’s tennis star Casper Ruud is one of several who have had a public wash of dirty laundry with Kyrgios – I think he’s a piece of shit. Everything he does is entertainment. As Rafa (Rafael Nadal) said to me: I can go out in the next match in just my underpants. It will be entertainment, but it is not good entertainment, said Ruud in the tennis podcast “Smash” in 2019.
