14 March 2023 at 20:37 24-year-old banned from all British football pitches for racism A 24-year-old man who sent racist incitement against Brentford striker Ivan Toney in social media has been banned from all British football arenas for three years in court. According to the BBC, it is the first time a judge in Great Britain has made use of a new law that gives the opportunity to impose such a punishment. The 24-year-old from Blyth was also given a four-month suspended sentence, but he is banned for three years from attending football matches in the UK and also from traveling abroad to watch football. In October, Toney published a direct message he had received from the man on Instagram, and the police treated it as a case of hate crime. The 24-year-old pleaded guilty in January to having written the message, and now he has received the sentence. – This sends a strong message. I am personally satisfied that racist incitement is now ending up in court. I don’t think the punishment is severe enough, but it is a step in the right direction, says Brentford manager Thomas Frank in a comment. Kick It Out, an organization that fights racism and discrimination in football, welcomes the verdict in a statement and expresses the wish that it become a guideline for the treatment of similar cases.
