Electricity can be twice as expensive in the winter

– People need more predictability and security when it comes to electricity expenses. The state must take a larger share of the electricity bill, says CEO Morten Andreas Meyer of the Home Owners’ National Association. On Monday, the government must explain to the Storting what it wants to do about the electricity crisis and the high prices people have to pay. From September, the state pays 90 per cent of the electricity bill above 70 øre per kilowatt hour to the country’s households. The homeowners believe that this arrangement is too bad. Because even with today’s electricity support, electricity costs for many can still be more than twice as high as the level of prices that have been common in recent years. Here the Homeowners are asking that the state must pay 100 per cent of the electricity bill above 50 øre per kilowatt hour. – We ask that the Storting get together on an arrangement that involves a maximum price of 50 øre, says Meyer. Meyer does not believe that a maximum price will lead to households saving less and that more support will lead to increased electricity use. – People understand how important it is to save electricity, it’s about our own wallet, but also about solidarity with Ukraine and the rest of Europe. Besides, most of us have to save what we can, and we have had to save on electricity for the past year. This will not change with a better compensation scheme, points out Meyer. Because the FRP has proposed the same thing since last autumn. Nilsen now expects the government to come up with new proposals as early as Monday, which will mean that more people will be able to pay their electricity bills. – Especially with regard to forecasts of electricity prices for the winter, we can get extreme prices, and then we need a maximum price of 50 øre to get us through this, says Nilsen. But a new, lower maximum price for electricity will not be adopted, according to energy policy spokesperson Geir Pollestad in the ruling Center Party. – Now, from September, we have strengthened the scheme so that it covers 90 per cent of that over 70 øre. There is no need for any strengthening of support, I think it is a good arrangement, says Pollestad.
