The Arrest of Notorious Drug Dealer ‘El Lunátiko’ in Mexico City

In a significant move against drug trafficking in Mexico City, elements of the Ministry of Citizen Security (SSC) successfully apprehended Luis Emmanuel Barroso Ortiz, popularly known as “Lunátiko” or “Lunay.” Ortiz is a notorious member of the Tepito Union, a group that has been in constant conflict with rival factions for dominance in the drug trade, particularly in the Morelos and Centro colonies.

The arrest was part of ongoing preventive patrols in the Cuauhtémoc Mayor’s Office. During these operations, police apprehended two individuals who were found with apparent marijuana, cocaine, and glass.

According to the statement released by the SSC, this operation was driven by various investigative measures following a recent shooting incident that took place on November 24, 2024, on Joaquín Herrera Street, resulting in the loss of three lives.

The authorities highlighted that those involved in this attack were linked to a cell opposing the Tepito Union, thus prompting a comprehensive intelligence operation in the region, which included fixed and mobile surveillance.

During a patrol on Joaquín Herrera, police noticed two males on a blue motorcycle handling illegal drug packages. Upon realizing the police presence, they attempted to escape, leading to a pursuit that ended on Republic of Bolivia Street, where they were brought to the ground and arrested.

Emmanuel Barroso Ortiz and his accomplice, Aldo Ramses Carreño Águilas, aged 23 and 29 respectively, were taken into custody and presented to a Public Ministry agent for further legal proceedings.

The SSC revealed that “[i]l Lunátiko” has been engaged in a fierce rivalry with the Tepito Union, which is known for its illicit activities involving drug trafficking, weapons, extortion, and debt collection.
