Editor stands for statement that Sami are greedy – news Troms and Finnmark

– I think they are a bit egotistical. They only promote their special interests, and do not think about the interests of society and the larger community. That’s what the editor of Finansavisen, Trygve Hegnar, says about why he called Sami too greedy for management positions in Finansavisa. The leader has led to strong reactions. The background for the manager is that Hegnar is reacting to the Fosen case. The Supreme Court has concluded that the wind turbines that have been set up at Fosen infringe the rights of the Sami who engage in reindeer husbandry in the area. Hegnar accepts the verdict, but believes it is wrong to conclude that the wind turbines must be demolished as activists demand. – It is not the case that Sami interests trump everything, says Hegnar. – Everyone knows that it costs hundreds of millions to tear them down. Everyone knows that it cost 6 billion to set it up, he says. – Should stick to the case Sandra Marja West has been elected to the Sami Parliament for the party Norwegian Samirs Riksforbund (NSR). Today she met Hegnar for a debate on news Helgemorgen. – He should stick to the issue instead of branding an entire group of people, says West. She says that Sami children are met with questions in the schoolyard such as: “Why are you so selfish?” “Why are you taking away our electricity?” “Why are you so greedy?” West believes that Hegnar contributes to such attitudes by calling the Sámi greedy. – He can rather write that Sami parliament politicians are greedy. I think it is a derogatory term against a group of people, she says. Sandra Marja West, Sámi parliamentary representative for the Norwegian Sámi National Confederation (NSR), believes Hegnar could have moderated the use of words considerably. Photo: Aslaug Aarsæther / news West believes that Hegnar has a special responsibility. – As an editor, he has a greater responsibility for the change of words than the ordinary man in the street because of his audience, she says. – Must endure criticism Hegnar does not believe that he has any additional responsibility to reduce incitement in his role as editor. – Of course, I did not mean that all Sámi are the same, he says. – It is no offense to say that the Sami are very militaristic when it comes to questions about Fosen. They want that facility gone. The Sámi also have to endure criticism when they are a bit one-track, Hegnar believes. West says she registers that he says he doesn’t mean all Sami. – I hear that he says that Sami are militaristic, so it is a bit difficult to take it seriously when he says that he does not mean that all Sami are greedy when he continues to characterize Sami in that way, she says. – We tolerate criticism, but Hegnar should moderate his use of words and stick to the point, says West.
