Everything went wrong for the Netherlands on Saturday night. After Hassan first fell in the 10,000m race, the question was whether the Dutch 4×400 medley relay team could secure gold 20 minutes later. Femke Bol was sent out in the lead on the last stage. There she led all the way until 10–15 meters remained. In a close duel with Alexis Holmes, she fell to the ground just meters before the finish line. – I didn’t quite find the rhythm that I usually do. I think I had a convulsion when I felt someone next to me and suddenly I was on the ground. I didn’t want it to happen, but it happened, says Bol in the press zone. She quickly recovered and crossed the finish line in third, but the Netherlands were left without a valid result as Bol lost the baton in the fall. What could have been a Dutch party night thus turned into a major anticlimax for the Dutch in the stands in Budapest. STOMACH FLAP: Femke Bol on her way down the hill. The feeling she must have when she gets up must be absolutely horrible, added fellow commentator Christina Vukicevic Demidov. Hassan: – Very shocked Sifan Hassan tried the triple with 1500, 5000 and 10,000 meters at the Olympics in Tokyo. It ended with two golds and one bronze (1500 metres). In this year’s World Athletics Championships in Budapest, she makes another attempt at the triple. Earlier on Saturday, she easily progressed from the 1,500 meter trial and by evening time it was ready for the 10,000 meter final. There it looked like it was going to be gold. With 300 meters to go she took the lead and on the run she was still first, just ahead of Ethiopian Gudaf Tsegay. But then things went wrong. – What can I say? It just happened. I felt really good in the last 200 metres, but what can I do, Hassan asks in an interview with news. Hassan gradually veered further into the track, while Gidey kept a more or less straight line. Twice Hassan’s elbow was up in Gidey’s chest, before with around 30 meters to go she lost her balance and plunged to the ground. – I was very shocked, she says of the fall, and goes on to say that she is very disappointed. After the finish, Tsegay jogged back again to take Hassan over the finish line. There she met a smiling Hassan, who gave gold winner Tsegay a hug. At the same time, blood could be seen flowing from Hassan’s elbow. – She got a real cut there, says news expert Vebjørn Rodal. The gold went to Tsegay and it was an Ethiopian party night with silver and bronze also for Letesenbet Gidey and Ejgayehu Taye. Hassan finished in eleventh place. The next race for Hassan comes already on Sunday evening, with the semi-final of 1500 metres. Should Hassan reach the finals of both the 1,500 and 5,000 meters, it will mean six races in eight days.
