Many years ago,  Dungeons & Dragons , the legendary role-playing game of paper, pencil, and dice, was not considered mainstream entertainment. Initially, it attracted a niche audience, but by the 1980s, it had already spawned a range of  animation, video games , and  novels  based on its intricate lore. Recently, however, the franchise has experienced a resurgence in popularity, thanks largely to  content creators  and their dedicated efforts to showcase a hobby now embraced by millions.

A triumph that does not cease. Today,  Dungeons & Dragons  boasts over 50 million registered players worldwide. In 2020, sales of official D&D products surged by 33% compared to the previous year, marking seven consecutive years of double-digit growth. In 2021, Wizards of the Coast generated over $1 billion, despite Hasbro, the parent company, facing substantial financial losses that year.

This impact has led to an unprecedented presence in the mainstream media. One of Netflix’s hit shows,  Stranger Things , incorporates elements of D&D in its mythology, with the last season focusing on the game and the “satanic panic” that surrounded it in the 1980s. In 2023, the highly anticipated  Baldur’s Gate III  was among the best-selling video games, and the film adaptation  Honor Among Thieves  grossed a commendable $208 million at the box office.

The usual success. Historically,  D&D  has always enjoyed a degree of success. Even in the 1980s, specialty stores dedicated to role-playing games flourished. If such stores emerged in places like Murcia, it indicated a substantial potential audience. Nonetheless, the game has recently experienced a unique rebirth, catalyzed not by traditional marketing, but rather by a confluence of factors: the natural evolution of gaming, the rise of digital platforms, and content creators who transformed personal gaming sessions into community experiences.

The turning point. A significant milestone occurred with the launch of the  5th Edition  in 2014. This was more than just a rule update; it marked a strategic reboot that laid the groundwork for the digital phenomenon that followed. An open “playtest” process not only democratized development but also established the community as a  co-creator , shaping the future of the game.

The mechanics of the game underwent a radical simplification. Previous editions required players to consult multiple, intricate tables and modifiers. In contrast, the 5th Edition employed a consistent system based on a 20-sided die, streamlining gameplay. The focus shifted from mere simulation to story-telling, granting content creators the freedom to weave narratives, while the simplified rules expedited video production. Wizards of the Coast even launched the “Basic Rules,” a completely free PDF containing all the essential rules for newcomers.

The first wave. The rise of dedicated content streams started with Critical Role in 2012. A group of voice actors began playing D&D on Twitch for fun, gradually evolving into a media empire complete with an animated series on Prime Video, official books from Wizards of the Coast, and an audience exceeding 10 million subscribers.

However, Critical Role is just a glimpse into a much broader ecosystem. Other channels like The Adventure Zone and Candela Oscura have also emerged, showcasing the joys of storytelling through gaming.

A very studied timing. The launch of the fifth edition coincided perfectly with the rise of streaming platforms.  Twitch  was acquired by Amazon shortly after the edition’s release, and subsequently, YouTube enhanced its creator tools and  Discord  emerged in 2015. An open license and reference systems were also introduced, empowering content creators, app developers, and media producers to generate derivative content without legal concerns.

The scene grows. Since then, channels focused on role-playing games have proliferated. Some have even eclipsed Critical Role, like Dimension 20, which has performed live shows at Madison Square Garden. This growth is not limited to English-speaking audiences; notable Spanish-language streams like  Orslokx ,  Elrubius , and  Alexby11  have engaged audiences through their D&D sessions. Channels like Lynx’s Adventures, The Dragon Mansion, Dice Within, and Churros & Dragons have also gained substantial followings.

It is both ironic and significant that a game rooted in analog traditions has achieved its newfound fame largely through advancements in technology. This indicates that  Dungeons & Dragons  remains one of the most universal and adaptable games available today. As it continues to reach new audiences, its evolution is undoubtedly far from over.
