Strengthening Organ Donation Culture in the Dominican Republic
The Ministry of Health of the Dominican Republic is spearheading a crucial campaign to enhance the culture of organ donation. This initiative aims to promote ethical values, foster trust, and provide clear information to the public regarding organ donation.
Launch of the Initiative
Launched during the national symposium titled “Communicate to Donate Life,” this campaign was a collaborative effort involving the National Transplant Coordination Institute (Incort), the Dominican College of Journalists (CDP), the Circle of Health Journalists (Cipesa), and the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) in Santo Domingo. The symposium served as a pivotal platform for discussing strategies aimed at increasing the rate of organ donations in the country.
Call to Action
The Minister of Health, Victor Atallah, earnestly called upon journalists and opinion leaders to become allies in this mission. He emphasized that addressing organ donation is not solely an institutional responsibility but a human commitment. Minister Atallah stated, “Each citizen’s decision can give another person a second chance.”
Addressing Misconceptions
One of the foremost challenges that the campaign seeks to address is the pervasive myths, fears, and misinformation surrounding organ donation. The health ministry is committed to reinforcing educational and communicational support for families to counter these obstacles.
The Role of Media
José Juan Castillos Almonte, director of Incort, highlighted the power of the media as the “fourth estate” in shaping public perceptions about organ donation. He stated that well-told stories can inspire families to consider donation, allowing for life-saving transplants. “By highlighting life and the positive impact on recipients, media can save lives,” he expressed.

Collaboration and Agreements
The symposium concluded with the signing of two inter-institutional collaboration agreements between the CDP and Cipesa. This initiative aims to pool resources and efforts to promote and disseminate information regarding organ donation and transplantation in the Dominican Republic.
Current Challenges
The Dominican Republic is currently grappling with one of the lowest rates of organ and tissue donation in the region, recording an alarming 0.65 donors per million inhabitants, with family refusals reaching 71%. These statistics underline the urgent need for education and advocacy to dispel misunderstandings about the donation process.
The Future of Organ Donation in the Dominican Republic
By addressing ethical, legal, and bioethical aspects during discussions, along with utilizing the influence of media, this campaign strives to transform perceptions and foster a more supportive environment for organ donation. Focused efforts on educating the youth and engaging the community are instrumental in building a stronger culture of donation across the nation.
