Last month, the  automotive market  experienced a significant  decline  with new registrations dropping by  12%  compared to May 2024. The French brand  Renault  performed even worse than the overall market, seeing a substantial decline of  15.2% , whereas its sister brand  Dacia  saw a rebound in registrations, increasing by  12.4% , notably driven by the  Duster  model.

May witnessed no foreign models penetrating the  top 10 , as both the  Yaris  and  Yaris Cross  narrowly missed out. Similarly, no electric vehicles made the top ranks, with the  best-selling electric model , the  Citroën ë-C3 , managing just  1,500 units  sold. Here are the ten most registered models in the French market last month.

1. Renault Clio (9,737 Units)

Once again, the  Renault Clio  finished the month well ahead of the competition, with  9,737 units  registered. This strong performance allows the Clio to extend its lead, accumulating a total of  42,671 units  since the start of the year.

2. Peugeot 208 (6,061 Units)

Coming in at second place last month, the  Peugeot 208  has consistently remained a top contender throughout the year. However, while it loses some ground to the Clio, it gains slightly against the  Dacia Sandero .

3. Dacia Sandero (5,741 Units)

During May, the  Dacia Sandero  nearly matched the Peugeot 208’s performance, falling short by just  300 units . Importantly, it remains the most sold car among private individuals since the beginning of the year and ranks third overall.

4. Peugeot 2008 (4,885 Units)

The  Peugeot 2008  continues to outperform the Renault  Captur , recording  4,885 units  in registrations. This impressive figure solidifies its position, although the  Captur – Symbioz  duo together surpasses  5,600 units  in the  B-SUV  segment.

5. Dacia Duster (3,279 Units)

The  Dacia Duster  maintains its momentum, securing fifth place last month and ranking fifth overall this year. It trails the Peugeot 2008 slightly but leads its segment among private buyers. This exceptional success allows it to outperform its predecessor substantially.

6. Peugeot 3008 (3,229 Units)

The  Peugeot 3008  again topped its segment (C-SUV), far ahead of the Renault  Austral , which didn’t even make it to the top 10, registering only  1,360 units .

7. Renault Symbioz (2,855 Units)

While its success was somewhat unexpected last year, it’s now a norm. The  Renault Symbioz  has once again slightly outsold the  Captur  last month.

8. Renault Captur (2,827 Units)

Once more, the  Renault Captur  was edged out by its larger sibling, the  Symbioz , by just a few registrations. However, with the  Symbioz-Captur  combination, Renault decisively leads the  B-SUV  segment.

9. Citroën C3 (2,585 Units)

Citroën’s C3  struggled against the likes of the  Peugeot 208 ,  Renault Clio , and  Dacia Sandero . With  2,585 units , it barely outperformed its electric variant, which registered only  1,500 units . Unlike the 208 and its  e208  version, the C3’s electric counterpart is counted separately.

10. Peugeot 308 (2,439 Units)

Closing out the top 10 is the  Peugeot 308 , which recorded  2,439 units  in registrations for the month.

The French automobile market is currently experiencing a  transitional phase  marked by significant shifts in consumer preferences and brand performances. While traditional brands like Renault and Peugeot continue to dominate, emerging segments such as SUVs are witnessing an upward trajectory. Despite the overall decline in registrations, some models have shown resilience and growth, indicating a potentially bright future for specific brands. The ongoing competition between these automotive giants will be crucial in shaping the landscape for the coming years. With fluctuating market dynamics, manufacturers will need to adapt swiftly to both consumer trends and regulatory demands to remain competitive.
