New Aid for Electric Vehicle Purchases: The Auto Plus Plan Explained

New year, new help! The Spanish Government has unveiled the Auto Plus Plan, which aims to replace the previous MOVES III Plan. This initiative seeks to address the challenges consumers faced while trying to secure aid for purchasing electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles.

Integration within the Spain Auto 2030 Plan

The Auto Plus Plan is part of the larger Spain Auto 2030 Plan, which outlines a significant investment of 300 million euros to facilitate charging point installations. An additional 580 million euros is allocated for launching industrial activities related to vehicle and component production in Spain, under the PERTE VEC initiative.

Direct Financial Support for Buyers

Starting January 1, 2026, the Government will allocate up to 400 million euros directly to buyers. This change addresses past criticisms regarding the aid being channeled through Autonomous Communities, which often led to inconsistencies in funding availability across regions.

A Closer Look at the Auto Plus Plan Benefits

This plan addresses long-awaited changes. Previously, buyers faced significant bureaucratic hurdles and long waiting times—sometimes extending up to 18 months—to receive assistance. With the Auto Plus Plan, funds will be available immediately at the point of purchase, allowing buyers to apply discounts directly to the vehicle price.

The Government has indicated that the specifics regarding discount amounts are yet to be announced. Here’s what we know from previous plans:

  • Electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids with 90 or more kilometers of autonomy may qualify for a guaranteed discount of 4,500 euros, plus an additional 2,500 euros if an older vehicle (over seven years) is scrapped.
  • Plug-in hybrids with a range between 30 and 90 kilometers may receive a discount of 2,500 euros, with the same additional 2,500 euros for scrapping an older vehicle.

Questions Still Unanswered

While the initiative presents exciting opportunities, several questions remain regarding eligibility for kilometer 0 and pre-owned vehicles, which began affecting plans in 2023. It’s also unclear whether discounts will apply to vehicles priced above the previous cap of 45,000 euros (before VAT).

Streamlining the Application Process

One major improvement is the elimination of bureaucratic barriers that varied from region to region. Previously, different regions had different documentation requirements; now, the process will be uniform, allowing for smoother transactions. Buyers will no longer face the frustration of regional discrepancies in fund availability.

Conclusion

The Auto Plus Plan marks a significant step towards simplifying the journey for consumers interested in purchasing electric vehicles in Spain. With the immediate availability of funds, simplified processes, and targeted support, the plan aims to usher in a new era of electric mobility. As the implementation date approaches, keeping an eye on further announcements regarding discount specifics will be crucial for prospective buyers.
