In early 2025,  Deepseek  emerged as a significant player in the artificial intelligence (AI) industry, creating waves by introducing a model that garnered immense attention. Developed by the specialized quantitative coverage fund  High-Flyer , Deepseek was lauded for being a powerful AI solution that was  free of charge , rivaling established giants like  OpenAI  and  Google . However, this AI breakthrough prompted intense debate surrounding the  hardware  used in its development.

High-Flyer, known for utilizing advanced mathematical models and computational algorithms in investment decisions, claimed to have trained  Deepseek R1  using 2,048  NVIDIA H800  chips. However, analysts quickly challenged this assertion, suggesting that the figure was inflated. Many speculated that the actual number of  NVIDIA H100  GPUs employed was closer to  50,000 , a more powerful model acquired through various intermediaries. It’s worth noting that U.S. sanctions currently restrict  NVIDIA  from supplying chips to Chinese companies. Thus, speculation has arisen about how Deepseek will manage to develop its next iteration without relying on this American manufacturer.

The Search for Alternative Hardware Solutions

In a revealing post on the  WeChat  platform, the team behind Deepseek hinted that the next generation of  GPUs  in China would be unveiled soon. This announcement sent ripples of speculation through the industry regarding which Chinese company would make this vital hardware available. Importantly, many believe that  High-Flyer  is preparing for a future iteration of Deepseek using these upcoming chips. Given the current trajectory of the Chinese tech sector, this assessment doesn’t seem implausible.

According to the  South China Morning Post (SCMP) , there are five major GPU designers in China capable of supplying the necessary hardware for  High-Flyer . These include  Huawei Technologies ,  Cambricon Technologies ,  Moore Threads ,  Hygon Information Technology , and  Metax Integrated Circi . Any of these firms could potentially be the one to fulfill Deepseek’s upcoming hardware needs, but we lean towards the first three due to their existing capabilities and infrastructure.

Cambricon Technologies stands out as a promising firm in the AI GPU sector.

Among these contenders,  Cambricon Technologies  has emerged as a notable player specializing in AI GPU design. While it may not hold the same widespread recognition as  Huawei  or  Moore Threads , it has shown substantial growth potential. Recently, Cambricon secured authorization from the  Shanghai Stock Exchange  to raise  $560 million  aimed at the development of four chips tailored for training and inferring AI models. Furthermore, they plan to develop an alternative to NVIDIA’s  CUDA  platform, targeting a growing niche.

Moore Threads  has also made significant strides in the AI hardware market by introducing several GPUs that compete with offerings from  NVIDIA ,  AMD , and  Huawei . Their most notable products include the  MTT S4000  and  MTT S3000  cards. Interestingly, they have also developed the  MTT S80 , which focuses on gaming and content creation, boasting a performance capability of  14.4 Tflops  in single-precision floating-point operations. These advancements illustrate just how competitive the landscape has become.

It’s difficult to overlook  Huawei , another essential player in the realm of AI chips. Currently, their flagship product is the  Ascend 910D  chip, designed to outperform NVIDIA’s H100 GPU. Additionally, the recent unveiling of the  Ascend 920  chip indicates Huawei’s commitment to capitalizing on gaps left by NVIDIA’s plans in the Chinese market. This ambitious solution is projected to enter large-scale production in the latter half of 2025 and utilizes  6nm integration technology  developed in collaboration with  Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corporation (SMIC) .

As the tech landscape evolves, industry watchers remain keenly interested in the progress of Deepseek and its implications for AI development, especially in light of  U.S. tech restrictions  and China’s ongoing efforts to bolster its domestic tech capabilities. Maintaining innovation will be paramount, fueling healthy competition in the global AI market.

Deepseek’s journey stands as a testament to the power of innovation, collaboration, and the ability to adapt in a rapidly changing environment. As hardware solutions become increasingly critical to AI’s future, the stakes are higher than ever. Only time will tell how these developments will shape the landscape of artificial intelligence across the globe.
