David González Resigns as Coach of Millionaires FC: A Turning Point in Colombian Football

Antioquia coach David González announced his resignation from the Technical Directorate of Millionaires FC, following a disheartening 1-2 defeat against Unión Magdalena at the El Campín stadium. This match was part of the Betplay 2025-II League, and the loss has intensified the ongoing sports crisis within the club.

González’s decision was influenced by the team’s disappointing performance, as they are currently at the bottom of the table concerning relegation. He succinctly noted, “The situation is unsustainable.”

During his press conference, González expressed his concerns, acknowledging the grim reality of the team’s situation: “Hello, good night, it is a situation too complex, and what was experienced today at the stadium is difficult. This is definitely not the kind of show people wish to see. After the game, let’s see, hot decisions taught me to try not to take them. But anyhow, I have been communicated by the club that I am not continuing. The situation is unsustainable, and our managers’ perspective is understandable. Changes will be made, and different things will surely emerge.”

The current state of Millionaires FC reflects one of the worst performances in recent tournaments, having only managed to secure 18 points in just six matches. The team’s deficiencies have led to a series of five losses in a row, derailing the sports project González had hoped to build when he took over.

Fans at El Campín displayed their discontent through repeated protests, even leading to incidents in the stands that prompted a temporary halt to the game. The management’s decision to hire González aimed at fostering a technical renewal in the wake of poor international tournament performances. However, the results failed to generate the desired enthusiasm among fans, who vocally expressed their anger during home games.

Acknowledging his responsibility during the press conference, González articulated the necessity for change: “Hot decisions taught me as a child not to take them, but I recognize my position within this context and accept that I’m stepping down.” His acceptance of responsibility highlights the team’s need for a transformation amidst rising tensions.

Accompanying González, central defender Jorge Arias also spoke candidly about the team’s predicament, stating, “It is difficult to speak at the moment. I feel embarrassed for what has happened today and for what has been happening for a long time… just as the teacher has to leave, pitifully, I say it publicly: we have to go. Everyone agrees, but football is such that it is easier for one person to leave than for all to do so.”

Arias elaborated further on the coaching staff: “Talking here now may seem like an excuse. The teacher leaves behind much knowledge for us. What happened on the field, we have to acknowledge we couldn’t deliver. We wish him and the technical group all the best.

The recent result against Unión Magdalena, the last team in the relegation standings, has further exacerbated the already tense atmosphere among fans who yearn for renewed hope in the team’s performance. The impact of this loss, combined with the disappointing shows in international tournaments and poor local campaign, has left fans feeling despondent.

The Board of Directors of Millionaires has yet to announce an interim manager to guide the professional squad in this challenging phase. With important fixtures in both the Betplay League and the Betplay Cup on the horizon, the pressure on the club remains significantly high.

González’s departure signals not just an end to a turbulent chapter but also a potential reawakening for Millionaires FC. As Arias poignantly remarked, “When you are treated well but cannot capitalize on that support, it’s disheartening. This coaching staff was exceptional, and it’s frustrating not to have performed better.”

The club’s immediate future hinges on effective decision-making by the management to reinvigorate the team spirit and successfully navigate the ongoing sports challenges, balancing the urgent need for results against mounting external expectations. The journey forward will require a concerted effort from all aspects of the organization as they strive to restore their pride in Colombian football.
