The 12-year-old was out with some schoolmates playing football close to the flooded river. The football landed on the water and the boy went to pick it up. But he was taken by the strong current. Fellow students tried to rescue Irakiza, who was quickly taken away. An extensive search for the boy was immediately launched from land, water and air. This went on both night and day until Saturday 1 June. It was then found in the mouth of Stabburselva, 1.7 kilometers away from Stabbursdalen camp school. Affected society Municipal director in Alta municipality, Oddvar Konst, tells news that the case has strongly affected Alta society, and not least the affected class at Komsa school. – It is a tragic accident which primarily affects the family concerned, but it also affects students, teachers and parents of those who go to the two schools and those who were on the trip, says Konst.
