26 August 2024 at 21:11 Dam collapsed in Sudan – at least 132 dead On Saturday evening, the Arbaat dam collapsed in Sudan after heavy rain. On Sunday, the BBC reported, among other things, that at least 60 people have lost their lives as a result of the accident. On Monday, the death toll rose to 132, according to the country’s Ministry of Health. The figure is reproduced by, among others, NTB and France24. The UN has reported a lower death toll, but says the death toll may rise. Dozens of people are still missing, and over 100,000 people have been affected by the flood. Local residents told AFP that several people were trapped in their cars when the dam burst. There is also major damage to the road network, communication lines and power supply, writes NTB. According to the UN emergency aid office OCHA, thousands of homes have been destroyed. The Arbaat Dam is located north of the city of Port Sudan, and is the city’s main source of drinking water. The dam had a capacity of 25 million cubic meters. Sudan has already been affected by a humanitarian crisis after civil war broke out in April 2023. More than 10 million people have been displaced.
