Two days later, on Monday, the royal house announced that King Harald needs a permanent pacemaker due to his heart rate being too low. – It is not a major intervention. It is usually done with local anaesthetic. The pacemaker is then placed as a matchbox-sized battery under the skin, preferably in the left shoulder region. Then the wires go from there and down to the heart, explained cardiologist Lars Aaberge at Oslo University Hospital to news on Monday. The king has to be completely infection-free before the permanent pacemaker can be operated on. It may therefore take several days before he can be discharged from Rikshospitalet.
