When the boat docked in Båtsfjord on 30 November, the crew discovered that a crow had snuck along. Throughout almost the whole of December, the crow remained and eventually became a loving member of the gang on “MS Leinebris”. The crew have given the friendly crow the name Kalle Kra. – The first few days we tried to get it out. We opened all hatches and doors, but it didn’t want to get out, laughs Remy Bakkebø, who is one of the crew members on the fishing vessel. It was iFinnmark that mentioned this case first. Happy with French fries As time passed, Bakkebø became increasingly impressed by how adaptable their new companion was. – It is an intelligent crow. It seemed to understand that if it disappeared and went out to sea, it would probably die, says the fisherman. The crow Kalle Kra became a stowaway on a fishing trip. They soon found out that Kalle Kra is not exactly picky when it comes to food. – We filled an ice box with fresh water and gave it leftovers from dinners. In addition, we found out that it likes both liver paste, pork chops and sausages. It was particularly fond of fries, he chuckles and chimes in: – We even gave him Christmas dinner. It also ate it up. Jo Anders Auran is a senior advisor in the Norwegian Environment Agency and is responsible for management issues relating to bird species. Auran was not surprised when he was told the story of Kalle Kra from news. He says that crows are social and intelligent animals that often get close to people. – Crows are highly adaptable animals, both in urban conditions and otherwise in nature. They will eat anything and look after you if you treat them properly. The crow “Kalle Kra” had a month-long stay in the Arctic on the fishing boat “MS Leinebris”. Photo: Remy Bakkebø Close relationship The senior advisor in the Norwegian Environment Agency further states that crows can have a good relationship with people, but it does not always have to be a good relationship. – They have a very close relationship with people, for better or for worse. A crow that is treated well will give back, while a crow that is treated badly can quickly screw up your car. The bird expert says he has heard of similar stories where crows have come close to people, but never of them joining a month-long fishing trip. – In this case, it was a pity for the crow that the fishing boat left. Then it really should have jumped off the boat before it ended up too far from shore. It’s not exactly the main habitat of a crow, chuckles Auran. – Sad Thursday this week the crew unfortunately had to chase the crow out of the fishing boat. Now they are going south to Sunnmøre. – It will be a bit sad to say goodbye to the crow, but it is surely good for it to get out. It has probably been a bit afraid to travel out, says Remy Bakkebø. – It has been special to celebrate Christmas together with a crow out at sea. I have never experienced that a bird has been with us for an entire trip.
