When the trial went before the Buskerud District Court a few weeks ago, an opportunity arose to retrieve the children from Sudan with the help of the Norwegian authorities, but the father did not want to sign on to it. At the same time, many Norwegian citizens received help to get out of Sudan. The children, who are all under the age of ten, are with the man’s family in Sudan. Took breaks in court to call family During the trial at the end of April, the mother said that she is constantly afraid of her children, whom she has not seen for almost a year. It emerged that the children were probably with the man’s family in Sudan. Breaks were taken during the court for the father to call his family, in an attempt to get the children out of the country. But he finally said no to this. Now the possibilities of getting the children out of Sudan are much smaller. Sjak Haaheim said that a couple of weeks after the trial had ended. Haaheim is the three children’s legal representative. – The Norwegian authorities cannot take the children out without Sudan allowing them to do so, and I consider that possibility to be very small now, said Haaheim. Grew up in Norway All three children were born in Norway and have Norwegian citizenship. – I am constantly afraid that something or other may fall on the house where the children are, she said. The man was also charged with having prevented the Norwegian authorities from coming into contact with the children, and for physical and psychological violence against his wife. The prosecution’s claim was for four years in prison, while defender Monica Behn Jacobsen believed the man should be acquitted. Each of the three children is awarded NOK 50,000 in compensation from the father in the judgment. Prosecutor Monica Hanø says in a comment to news that she is satisfied with the verdict: – I am very satisfied that the Buskerud district court has followed the prosecution’s assessment of the evidence. – Will any appeals be considered from the prosecution’s side? – It is too early to say anything about now. It is up to the public prosecutor to decide. In that case, there will be a question about the sentencing which was somewhat different from what was claimed. We will make that assessment within a reasonable time, says Hanø.
