A lot of wind, and a lot of waiting. This marked the normal hill race tonight. It varied a lot from a lot of buoyancy and good conditions, to heavy tailwinds and hopeless opportunities to fly. Kristoffer Sundal Eriksen really got to know the latter. When he landed at 91 metres, the result list showed that he received a whopping 11.5 points plus points for poor conditions. It was clear most of all. – It’s completely crazy to be allowed to jump in the conditions I have when the others don’t jump in anything close to the same, says Sundal to news, and continues: – There is an oblique crosswind from behind. It’s the worst thing you can have. It’s terribly heavy, that’s one thing. It is difficult to jump symmetrically and nicely when there is so much tailwind. It didn’t even feel like an attempt to do it justice. Ukrainian Yevhen Marusiak got good conditions, and set a provisional hill record: HILL RECORD: Here the Ukrainian sets a hill record. news has asked for a comment from the jury. The varying conditions were decisive in the gold match. Piotr Zyla jumped up eleven places, and defended his gold from 2021. – It will be a parody of a show jumping race. It’s a shame that it turns out that way, but now it turned out that way. In any case, I am satisfied with my effort, says Halvor Egner Granerud, who was the best Norwegian in 11th place. – Anger, emptiness… What feeling do you have inside you now? – Disappointment. Right now I’m just fed up. Ironic clapping Sundal wasn’t the only one who was clearly pissed off at the conditions. Austrian Daniel Tschofenig obviously clapped ironically after he was released in bad conditions. – Look at the wind combination he gets. All arrows point downwards. 9.8 plus points. There is simply no way to fight with the best when there are such large variations. One thing is variations in the end behind him or buoyancy, but that it varies from proper buoyancy to a good deal of back draft, then you have no chance if you get among the worst conditions, said Johan Remen Evensen. IRONIC CLAP: Daniel Tschofenig was very unhappy with the conditions. Sundal was eventually number 21, and is aware that it meant nothing for a medal that he was faced with hopeless conditions. But he is fighting to represent Norway in the mixed competition. – I could do the jump of my life ten times over there, and still not get the result I deserved. There is little that can be done about it. When they wait so long at the top there, it must be possible to wait a little longer, says Sundal. He also won’t get the opportunity in the mixed team competition, because there Johann André Forfang and Granerud will jump for the men. Thea Minyan Bjørseth and Anna Odine Strøm will jump for the women. Wrong start The big favorite before today’s race, Halvor Egner Granerud, did not get an optimal start in today’s competition. When there were three jumpers left in the first round, the wind turned completely. This made it difficult for Granerud, who jumped last. The Norwegian finished at 96.5 metres, and was only tenth. It was half a meter worse than his fiercest competitor, Dawid Kubacki, who also received several plus points for wind. But it was not because he had more difficult circumstances than the Pole. – He does not get any more points than Kubacki, and that is because there is more crosswind. But there are difficult conditions, especially at the bottom, says news’s expert Johan Remen Evensen. But it was extremely even, and there were few points up to the medals. Only 4.7 points separated him in tenth place and Stefan Kraft who was leading. – It was the best jump he has made so far in the WC. He has heavy conditions, especially in the first flight phase. There is a small distance up, so with a little more luck with the same conditions, it will be fine, sums up national team coach Aleksander Stöckl after the first half. WC debutant impressed Kristoffer Sundal Eriksen has come out of nowhere this season. He tapped experienced names such as Robert Johansson and Daniel Andre Tande for today’s race. In the first half, he took the chance, and nailed it with a jump of 97.5 metres. – I’m very pleased. He does a very nice job, and makes a real impact. That has been his challenge in training and the trial round. He managed it this time, he has a good style and is well on the results list, national team coach Alexander Stöckl concluded. – He is tough and hardworking, is the reaction of news expert Johan Remen Evensen. After the good jump in the first half, it was an offensive Sundal who met our reporter in the mixed zone. – It was really delicious. I’m probably not fighting for the medal today, but it’s great experience for the WC in Trondheim in 2025. I’ll be fighting for gold there, reports Sundal down on the plain. In the second half, Sundal followed up with 91 metres, in extremely difficult conditions.
