– Clear lack of trust between north and south – news Urix – Foreign news and documentaries

– I just got off the plane from the G20 meeting in Bali. COP27 President Sameh Shoukry has briefed me. We are at a critical juncture in the negotiations. COP27 is due to end in 24 hours, and the parties still disagree on a number of important issues, warns UN chief António Guterres. The Secretary-General started the summit on 7 November with a thunderous speech that the world was “heading towards climate hell”. He was no less serious on the way to the end of the negotiations: – There is a clear lack of trust between north and south, and between rich and emerging countries. This is not the time to blame others. Blaming each other is a recipe for guaranteed mutual destruction, says Guterres from the summit in Sharm el-Sheikh. Three key points Tomorrow is the last day of the summit, and many hope that the parties will agree on three key points: A sustainable framework for compensation for loss and damage as a result of climate change and pollution to developing countries. A stronger commitment to limit global warming to an average of less than 1.5 degrees. A clearer commitment to phase out fossil fuels such as oil, gas and coal. Guterres is now warning that the parties are nowhere near reaching an agreement on these points. – No one can deny the damage we see around the world. The world is burning and drowning as we watch. I encourage all parties to show that they see it – and understand it, says Guterres. An activist blows the air out of an inflatable globe outside the COP27 climate summit in Sharm el-Sheikh.
