A truce between Israel and the Islamic Holy War (Jihad) in the Gaza Strip comes into effect at 10 p.m., reports Egyptian TV. Egypt has brokered the ceasefire after five days of Israeli airstrikes and Palestinian rocket attacks, reports the news channel Al-Qahera on Saturday evening. The agreement involves an end to attacks on civilians and the demolition of houses, according to Al-Qahera. Palestinians rescue chickens from the ruins of the house where a member of Islamic Jihad lived. Zeyad Selmi’s house was hit in an Israeli airstrike on Saturday. If the ceasefire is confirmed, it will come into force at 21:00 Norwegian time. In the Gaza Strip, at least 34 Palestinians have been killed since the Israeli offensive began on Tuesday. Around half of them are civilians, six of whom are children, according to Palestinian health authorities. Almost 150 are injured. On the Israeli side, an 80-year-old woman was killed and two others injured when a Palestinian rocket hit an apartment building in Rehovot south of Tel Aviv on Thursday. (NTB)
