3 July 2024 at 17:47 Casper Ruud quit Wimbledon – lost to Fognini Casper Ruud did not manage to beat his own career best in the Grand Slam tournament Wimbledon this year either. There was an exit in the 2nd round for Italian Fabio Fognini. Ruud struggled against his 94th-ranked opponent and lost in four sets with the set numbers 4-6, 5-7, 7-6 (7-1), 3-6. It was Fognini’s first win against Ruud in four attempts. They have previously played twice on clay and once on hard court. Fognini had never won a set against Ruud before Wednesday’s showdown on grass in London. The match was postponed for several hours due to rain, and when it got underway, Fognini proved to be very strong and broke Ruud in the Norwegian’s second service game. Afterwards, Ruud was close to breaking to 5-5, but Fognini saved himself and won the set 6-4. It was an even set with both taking 35 points each. (NTB) Fognini seemed to be somewhat tired during the match, but the Italian played very solidly, also in the second set. Ruud abused two break points at 3-2, and Fognini took advantage of that when he eventually broke the Norwegian to 6-5. Then he served in a 7-5 victory. Ruud also went out in the second round of the Grand Slam tournament a year ago.
