Inside the letter, on a note, it says: “Thank you for being here ❤️”. – If you’re having a bad day and find a card like this, it can really make a difference. It takes so little, says van Hoof. She writes encouraging words and poems on cards and leaves them in various places in Stavanger. It can be in a café, in a book in the library or on top of the copier at school. Here, van Hoof is about to put one of the letters in the postbox for the neighbour. She has no rule for where the letters are made. It can be anywhere. Photo: Simon Elias Bogen / news A warmer society In a digitized world, van Hoof believes people have a need to get handwritten cards. She started small by sending cards with small poems to friends. And that meant she was very much appreciated. – Then I started writing a lot of cards and putting them here and there. I always carry a card in my bag, she says. She recently started an Instagram account where she shares words and experiences. The user on Instagram @kind_little_notes is fairly new, but she gets messages from people who find her letters around town. They work to build a society with joy and belonging for everyone. They do this through courses and teaching at schools, in kindergartens and for parents. Abrahamsen says it’s great that van Hoof set aside time to care for others. – It is dark and a lot of bad things are happening at the moment. Photo: Aanonsen photo Abrahamsen believes that receiving a little kindness from a stranger will contribute to a more positive self-image. – Showing a friendly gesture like this is something that makes the world less harsh and cold. Little can mean a lot In van Hoof’s home, she, her husband and the three children talk a lot about what they can do to help others have a better day. – I usually say to my children that if they see someone in the shop or at school and smile at them, they may be the only one who has really seen that person that day. – Even a simple smile or a hello can mean a lot to a person, she says.
