– I have not taken the record for anything more than that it should be beaten again. Now it’s up to the next person. This is what national team paddler Eivind Vold says to news after crossing the finish line at Homborsund in Grimstad. Since Tuesday morning, he has been paddling from Hirtshals across the Skagerrak in pursuit of a crazy record. With bloody hands, he could celebrate already 9 hours and 53 minutes later. – You have to expect some blemishes, it’s part of the game. It’s really only when you stop that you feel it hurts, says Vold. The previous record for kayaking across the Skagerrak was 10 hours and 18 minutes. It was set by Bent-Inge Bakke from Søgne. He says that the first lessons were among the toughest. – I was a bit anxious at the start there. It was very difficult conditions with a lot of headwinds, says Vold. Further out to sea, however, Vold received more help from the elements. – The wind picked up a little and things got faster over time. After the trip across the Skagerrak, four months of chemotherapy await the paddler, who has also previously undergone cancer surgery. – We can hope that I tolerate the chemotherapy well too, so we will come back stronger, says Vold before he paddles on towards Homborsund jetty.
