Sweden had already advanced to the quarter-finals of the Ice Hockey World Cup, but there was still drama in the group final against the USA. The Swedes had already suffered a couple of problems with two nasty injuries, and at the very end of the last period there was another injury. But perhaps more of the curious – rather than ugly – kind. SOMETHING MISSING: This is what Raymond looked like with one less tooth. Photo: Pavel Golovkin / AP – Surrealistic At 3-3, just before extra time, Sweden’s Lucas Raymond received a high club in the face from an American player. There, Raymond simply had a tooth knocked out by the club. And while it may not be entirely unusual to lose a tooth in ice hockey, it was the pictures soon after that made the commentator’s eyes widen. – These are almost surreal images. Bizarre images, said SVT’s commentator Chris Härenstam. – He picks up the tooth there, said a surprised Härenstam. Because yes, right after the bang, Raymond squats down and picks up his own tooth from the ice. TOOTH IN HAND: Here Raymond sits with his tooth in a pinch. Screenshot courtesy of Vsport. Photo: Vsport – Looks worse than it is That a tooth breaks here and there is not in itself so unique according to former national team player Alexander Bonsaksen. He says most people play with a mouthguard, but it doesn’t always work if a club or puck hits the face. – It looks worse than it is. It’s strictly just a tooth, it’s not that unusual to lose one or two. He is not that old, so he will probably lose more, says former national team player Bonsaksen to news. Ouch!: Raymond feels for the broken tooth. Photo: Pavel Golovkin / AP And the referee probably agreed, because he told Raymond to get off the field quickly. – There was no pity to be had. The judges probably thought that it didn’t need to take more time than necessary, says Bonsaksen. He himself has lost some teeth, but never picked them up himself. He still believes it is not so abnormal. – He might be able to use it to make a new one, says Bonsaksen. Ready for the quarter-finals Just after the tooth situation, early in extra time, the USA turned the game around and won 4–3. Both teams had already advanced from the group stage, but the result of the match determined who they would meet in the quarter-finals. For the winners from the USA, it will be Canada that awaits in the quarter-finals. The Canadians recently lost to Norway for the first time in 23 years. The Swedes, on the other hand, face either the Czech Republic or Latvia. They may also have to make changes to the team, after both Rasmus Sandin and André Petersson had to pull out with injuries against the USA. UNSAFE: Sandin writhed in pain after the collision with USA’s Michael Eyssimont. Photo: Pavel Golovkin / AP – He was the one who did really badly. It was a tough match for the Swedes. We’ll see if they have to replace the two for the next game, says Bonsaksen. The former Sandin had to leave after a knee tackle. He is called an “absolute key player” by SVT’s expert Jonas Andersson. – The first reports are more positive than negative, but we have to wait until tomorrow, says Sweden’s national team coach Sam Hallam to SVT. Both players will be examined during the evening. The quarter-finals will be played on Thursday and will be shown on Viaplay.
