Bird flu detected in Svalbard for the first time – news Troms and Finnmark

A polar gull that was found dead at the quay in Longyearbyen earlier this month, had the disease, it turns out. According to the Veterinary Institute, this is the first time the virus has been detected in the entire Arctic. Bird flu has also been detected in several different mammals this year. It is rare for people to be infected with bird flu, but in general one should not touch dead birds and animals without protection. On 22 May this year, the Governor of Svalbard went out and asked the public to report if they found sick or dead birds.
