Berit Ås is dead – news Norway – Overview of news from various parts of the country

– It is with sadness that we can announce that SV’s first leader and the country’s first female party leader, Berit Ås, has passed away, writes the Socialist Left Party in a press release. Ås died on Saturday evening in his own home with his family around him, after a short illness. She lived to be 96 years old. SV leader Kirsti Bergstø visited Ås last Friday. – Berit has shaped both the Norwegian left and the public. She always carried with her a deep sense of justice and was active until the end. We are grateful for that, says Bergstø. Ås was born in Fredrikstad on 10 April 1928, and had a background as a teacher, occupational psychologist and university lecturer in social psychology at UiO. Later she also became associate professor and professor. In 1973, she became the first female party leader in Norway, when she became leader of the breakaway party Democratic Socialists (AIK). When the party was dissolved and SV was formed two years later, Ås became SV’s very first leader from 1975 to 1976. Previously, she has also represented the Labor Party, both as deputy mayor in Asker and as deputy representative for the Storting in Akershus. Ås has been a central force in both the peace and women’s movements in Norway. The book “Women in all countries – handbook in liberation” has been translated into many languages, and she was also internationally recognized for her work in identifying the five domination techniques. – By putting words to the oppression women faced in everyday life, she gave women a tool to stand together in community, against the techniques of domination. This is how she turned feminism into something practical, says Bergstø. In 1997, she was appointed a knight of the Order of St. Olav. Published 15.09.2024, at 17.48 Updated 15.09.2024, at 18.13
