In the coming months, Europe is set to debut a groundbreaking facility known as a starport, specifically designed to cater to stratospheric flight aircraft. This remarkable complex won’t be situated in a major metropolis or industrial hub, but rather in the lesser-known city of Teruel, a decision that surprises many.

Construction Update: Moving Towards the Future

The journey to create Teruel’s starport began over a year ago in March 2025. Recently, it gained attention due to a visit from Aragon’s acting Minister of Development, Octavio López, highlighting the project’s ongoing progress. López emphasized the importance of the timeline, stating that the goal is for the facility to be operational by 2027.

The latest reports indicate that construction is proceeding smoothly, with plans for a tender launch in the last quarter of 2026. This means the starport could potentially see its first operations in early 2027.

A Unique Venture: What Makes the Starport Special?

The Aragonese Government has dubbed this project “singular and unique in Europe.” The starport will enhance the Teruel airport’s capacity, enabling it to accommodate stratospheric aircraft, specifically HAPS (High Altitude Platform Systems) dirigibles that can operate at altitudes of 20,000 meters. This advancement positions Teruel as a central hub for the construction, commissioning, and maintenance of these cutting-edge aircraft.

Infrastructure and Design: A Titan in the Making

Set to occupy roughly 2.66 hectares, the main hangar and airship production hall will boast remarkable dimensions, with the hangar measuring approximately 376.2 x 70.8 meters. The facility will also feature a designated airship platform of 330 x 220 meters in front of the hangar.

Building such a massive structure requires substantial resources; construction will utilize about 2,266 tons of steel among other materials. One of the standout features will be the hangar door, measuring 60 x 52 meters, showcasing the scale of this ambitious project.

This starport is anticipated to elevate the regional economy and provide a significant boost to scientific endeavors. It is predicted that approximately 35 stratospheric airships will operate from this facility each year, serving purposes such as atmospheric observation and research.

The first stone for the project was laid on March 11, 2025, and the construction has been awarded a substantial budget of €39.8 million. As completion approaches at the end of this year, the Government plans to open a tender for prospective companies to manage the starport’s operations.

The aerospace company Sceye has already expressed interest, but the tender process will remain open, allowing any qualified firm globally to apply and help shape the future of this historical aviation landmark.
