Basile Boli Speaks Out on Paris Saint-Germain Ahead of Champions League Final

In a recent statement,  Basile Boli , the legendary former footballer known for his iconic tenure with  Olympique de Marseille (OM) , expressed his sentiments regarding the  upcoming UEFA Champions League final . With just two days until the anticipated clash between  Paris Saint-Germain (PSG)  and  Inter Milan , Boli felt it necessary to clarify his earlier comments that had stirred a measure of controversy among fans in Marseille.

“I will watch the final like everyone else. My heart remains blue and white, but I am behind Paris Saint-Germain. Representing France is important to me,” Boli stated.

His comments, shared here, did not go unnoticed among the passionate supporters of Marseille. Boli is famously remembered as the sole goalscorer in the  1993 Champions League final , where OM defeated AC Milan 1-0. His narrative has endured for decades, and his loyalty to Marseille is deeply ingrained in the club’s history.

“It was a show intended for children aged between 7 and 11, something light,” Boli explained in an interview with  La Provence . “My statements were misinterpreted. I may have upset many people, but I do not support anyone, and I’m certainly not angry with OM.”

Boli and the Controversy

Boli expressed his sentiments further: “It has been 32 years since a French team won the Champions League. I am Marseillais to the core, but first and foremost, I am French. Nobody can ignore the rivalry between OM and Paris. Like  Zinedine Zidane  and  Didier Deschamps , my heart cannot be anything but blue and white…” He insisted, “I have not said this to support Paris. Just like in tennis, when  Rafael Nadal  faces  Gaël Monfils , I support Monfils because he is French, even if the opponent is stronger.”

Boli made it clear that aligning with PSG is out of the question for him, asserting, “I cannot be a Parisian; that is impossible. I will watch the final on Saturday, but here’s the thing: the most important for me is that the Olympiens return to the Champions League next season.” His passion for football and his undying loyalty to Marseille remain apparent in every statement he makes.

This situation sheds light on the complex emotions intertwined with football loyalties, particularly in the context of French football. Boli’s reminder that sporting rivalry should not overshadow national pride resonates with many fans. While Marseille supporters may view his comments as controversial, Boli’s dedication to his roots is clear; for him, seeing any French team succeed on the European stage is a priority above all else. As the final approaches, fans around the world will be watching, but the sentiments both for and against the match will echo in the hearts of supporters long after the final whistle blows.
