18 January 2024 at 22:03 Barth Eide on Netanyahu’s statement: – Worrying Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide believes Netanyahu’s rejection of a two-state solution for Israel and Palestine is “very worrying”. – The Israeli prime minister’s statements are out of step with an almost unified international community, he writes in a statement to news, sent via communications adviser Ragnhild Simenstad. Earlier today, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he has informed the United States that he is against a Palestinian state after the Gaza war. The US later said that there is no alternative but for the Palestinians to have their own state. In the statement from Barth Eide, it is stated that Norway also does not believe that there is any credible alternative to a two-state solution, and that Norway recognizes the Palestinians’ right to a state of their own. – A ceasefire is very important, but at the same time only a step on the way. Returning to the situation that prevailed before 7 October is no longer possible. If the parties are to emerge from the spiral of violence we have seen develop over many years now, a real political solution is needed.
