Autumn’s hottest game – Reviews and recommendations

It’s been a great gaming year so far, with games like “Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree,” “Animal Well,” “Balatro,” “Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth,” “Helldivers 2,” “Dragon’s Dogma 2” and “Tekken 8” on many people’s top lists. But the year is by no means over. Here are the top ten games I’m looking forward to this fall: “Baby Steps” Developer: Bennett Foddy, Maxi Boch and Gabe Cuzzillo Publisher: Devolver Digital Platform: PC and PS5 Launch: Fall 2024 Developers of “Getting Over It” and “Ape Out » have teamed up to create this fall’s weirdest and potentially funniest game. Here you will take control of the limbs of the game’s main character and navigate the fully grown and mildly unsteady body through various challenges. “STALKER 2: Heart of Chornobyl” Developer: GSC Game World Publisher: GSC Game World Platform: PC and Xbox Series X/S Date: November 20 This gloomy and horror-dripping release has had a difficult birth to say the least. The Ukrainian developers were ramping up production when Russia invaded their homeland. A relocation to Prague and almost two years of painstaking refinement later, it is finally ready for launch. “Indiana Jones and the Great Circle” Developer: Machine Games Publisher: Bethesda Softworks Platform: PC and Xbox Series X/S Launch: Autumn 2024 A game based on a well-known film license is not always something to jump over. But when the license is Indiana Jones and the developers are Machine Games, who are behind the fantastic “Wolfenstein: The New Order” and “Wolfenstein: The New Colossus”, expectations rise significantly. “The Alters” Developer: 11 Bit Studios Publisher: 11 Bit Studios Platform: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S Launch: Fall 2024 In “The Alters” you are stranded on an alien planet and you only have a few days to you to get away before this planet is destroyed. But you are all alone, and the preparations that need to be made are overwhelming. The solution is to clone yourself. We are talking about an incredibly appealing combination of “survival crafting” and juicy sci-fi. “Astro Bot” Developer: Team Asobi Publisher: Sony Interactive Entertainment Platform: PS5 Launch: September 6 You might have tried the amazing “Astro’s Playroom”, which comes installed for free on PS5 consoles? Here, the playful creativity is transferred to an entire game, and the result looks extremely promising. Clear nods to classic action-adventure experiences like “Ratchet & Clank”, and that’s not exactly a negative! “Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2” Developer: Saber Interactive Publisher: Focus Entertainment Platform: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S Date: September 9 Here, the toughest marines in the Warhammer universe are sent out to slaughter enemies and monsters. Muscles, explosions, deng and gor in a beautiful combination, with an extra big fun factor if you have two friends to share the experience with. “Wanderstop” Developer: Ivy Road Publisher: Annapurna Interactive Platform: PC and PS5 Date: Fall 2024 On the surface, this is a cozy game about making and selling tea. But you control Alta, who is an ex-warrior with PTSD symptoms. And there’s something here that doesn’t quite add up. This game is made by what can be called a super team of developers: Davey Wreden (“The Stanley Parable”) is responsible for the script and direction, Karla Zimonja (“Gone Home”) is central to the team, and music and sound are handled by C418 ( “Minecraft”). “Neva” Developer: Nomada Studio Publisher: Devolver Digital Platform: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S and Switch Date: Fall 2024 The fresh Spanish studio Nomada won many gaming hearts with its dazzlingly beautiful “Gris” (which means “gray” in Spanish). Now they are ready with the somewhat more action-packed, but still unbearably beautiful “Neva” (the Spanish word for “snow”). I expect both snot and tears. “The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom” Developer: Nintendo Publisher: Nintendo Platform: Switch Date: September 26 After almost 40 years of “The Legend of Zelda”, a game where Princess Zelda actually stars is finally coming. This time she is the one who will save Link (and the rest of Hyrule), and the role change means completely new ways to play. Zelda uses magic instead of swords and such, and can manipulate objects, animals and much more to solve tasks. This could be fantastically good! “No Rest for the Wicked” Developer: Moon Studios Publisher: Private Division Platform: PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S Date: Undetermined It is perhaps a bit overly optimistic (but within the realm of possibility) to hope for a full launch of this game before the new year. But after over 30 amazing hours with the early access version of “No Rest for the Wicked” earlier this year, I’m sure we’re headed for a very special experience. Here, the developers of the brilliant “Ori” games have thrown themselves into the action role-playing game genre. World building and fighting is an incredibly exciting mix of “Diablo” and “Dark Souls”, the exploration gives associations to games like “Jak and Daxter” and “Ratchet & Clank”, the story oozes with “Game of Thrones”-like drama, and the the dazzlingly beautiful and distinctive visual style is carried over from the two “Ori” games. I can hardly wait! Much good from the home country As if this were not enough, it is also a particularly promising autumn for Norwegian games. We’ve already got “Thalassa: Edge of the Abyss”, and it’s just before Ragnar Tørnquist and his Red Thread Games release “Dustborn”. Later this autumn we get “The Holy Gosh Darn” (“Den Hellige Fy Flate” in Norwegian) from the developers of the excellent “Helheim Hassle”, Rock Pocket Games plans to launch its “Somber Echoes”, and Krillbite launches “Fruitbus”. Funcom is approaching the launch of “Dune Awakening”, and I have put a couple of lines under the promising “Sea Blip” and “Sacre Bleu”. Potentially Awesome There are also some potential blockbusters that didn’t make my list, including Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Star Wars Outlaws, Call of Duty: Black Ops 6, and Dragon Age: The Veilguard. Old favorites also appear in a completely new guise, with new versions of both “Silent Hill 2”, “Metal Gear Solid 3” (which has been titled “Metal Gear Solid Delta”) and the first three “Dragon Quest” games. And then I am so unsure of the launch date for the criminally promising players “Hollow Knight Silksong”, “Little Devil Inside” and “Light No Fire” that I dare not include them in my own top list. In other words, we are facing a potentially fantastic harvest of games. Hello, game friends! I am a freelancer and write about games for news. On a daily basis, I work at Level Up Norway.
