– Women must not automatically go into attack mode when the topic is men’s problems. That’s what deputy leader of AUF, Gaute Skjervø, says from the youth party’s summer rental on Utøya. In a noisy, grassy hill, the stage was set for an open discussion about what the AUF and the Labor Party should do in order to win over young male voters. The numbers speak for themselves. In the local elections in 2023, only 6 percent of men between the ages of 20 and 25 voted for the Labor Party. By comparison, 56 percent of them voted for either the Conservative Party or the Progressive Party. Moreover, the latter two made a fuss of a school choice. They were respectively the largest and second largest with 21.9 and 19.5 percent of the votes among upper secondary students. With him on stage together with Skjervø and equality minister Lubna Jaffery (Ap) was comedian Erlend Mørck, influencer and comedian Sunniva Tillson, better known as StSunniva, and influencer Gard Øksendal, or Mankegard, as he is called on TikTok. PROMO: Gard Øksendal, Mankegard on TikTok, is very popular on the platform where he also advertises his participation in AUF’s summer camp. – Why is it exactly these people you have invited? – Both because these are influencers who interact in a digital world where young men spend a lot of their time, and because much of the equality discussions we see today take place on TikTok. This gang speaks to a lot of young people, Skjervø answers. Communication problem The AUF sees a bias in how their policy is communicated to women and men. – I think it is primarily about an acknowledgment that we have not done enough for equality’s next step, says Skjervø. The 2023 school election National results in the 2023 school election. The students have voted as if it were a county council election. Compared to the corresponding election in 2019. According to the deputy leader, neither AUF nor the parent party has developed a good enough language to talk to men about their problems and challenges, which Skjervø believes start early in life. The panel entitled “What do we do with the boys?” was popular among the young politicians. The TikTok profile Mankegard thought aloud about why the left is losing the battle for the young guys. Influencers Sunniva Tillson and Gard Øksendal were invited to Utøya, together with news profile Erlend Mørch. You appear a bit desperate, he says from the stage. According to him, it feels like the right took men seriously earlier than their political opponents. Velle: – Rude A bouquet of top politicians has appeared around the world with great appeal among young male voters. Especially on the right side. The French far-right party Nasjonal Samling has party leader Jordan Bardella (28). Poland has the far-right Alliance for Freedom and Independence, led by Slawomir Mentzen (37). The Danish Liberal Alliance has Alex Vanoplagh (32), to name a few. All have made very good choices recently. Here at home, the Fremskrittspartiet has youth party leader Simen Velle (23). VIRAL: Interacting with your own followers is Simen Velle’s recipe for success on TikTok. He believes AUF does the opposite. Photo: Alf Simensen / Alf Simensen / news He has over 34,000 followers on TikTok. By comparison, AUF leader Astri Villa Hoem has just over 4,500. To NTB on Thursday, the AUF leader says that the bourgeois parties appear as “life coaches” on the platform, but without taking political responsibility themselves. This causes Velle to react. – The absence of social democracy is not the same as the absence of politics. Young Norwegians vote for different political solutions than those advocated by Astrid Hoem and AUF, and it is actually quite rude to pretend otherwise. – Do you think that your success on TikTok is only about politics? – No, I mean that it is a complex thing. It may well be that I have a social media account, I don’t know. But to think that you can win an election only on social media is to see ghosts in broad daylight in my eyes. The former reacted strongly after a suggestion from Velle that a few men have access to all the girls. Photo: Ksenia Novikova Velle denies that he has a sharper message than others on social media, but acknowledges that his way of communicating stands out. – What I do is that I actually talk even to the people who vote for me. I want to solve their problems, not tell them what their problems are. When asked whether the influencers at the summer camp are paid, AUF states that they do not initially pay any guests a fee, unless the contribution requires extra preparation from those who come forward. In the cases where fees are given, it is a question of symbolic sums, according to the youth party. Published 02.08.2024, at 16.40
