The unfortunate individuals who discover these cameras usually do so only by chance.” He added, “The key is to ensure that the device which constitutes the crime does not lose its evidentiary value. When the camera is installed or placed within a gadget, the perpetrator inevitably leaves fingerprints—whereas the victim often unwittingly contaminates the scene with their fingerprints. If you ever come across such a situation, it’s vital to be cautious about touching anything. Use gloves or a plastic bag to avoid leaving fingerprints.”
Two Methods to Detect Hidden Cameras
Demircan explained there are two primary methods for determining the presence of hidden cameras in a room. The first method involves visual and tactile inspection: “Turn off all the lights in your rented room and pull the curtains to create a dark environment. Then, using the flashlight on your smartphone, check areas where cameras might be located. The dark surroundings combined with a bright phone light can cause even well-hidden camera lenses to glimmer.”
The second method involves using smartphone or computer applications designed for detection. “If there is a hidden camera in your room, the person or people who installed it will likely connect it to the internet to view the footage remotely. You can identify such connections by utilizing an IP SCANNER program available online,” said Demircan, explaining that these tools can identify devices connected to the same WiFi network.
Thorough Inspection is Key
According to Demircan, all objects within the clear line of sight of the bed need an examination. “ Smoke detectors , power outlets, USB chargers, bedside lamps, clocks, air conditioning units, and even ventilation systems must be checked thoroughly. It’s imperative to inspect corners and any object that seems unusual. Just because a device looks innocuous doesn’t mean it isn’t hiding a camera,” he cautioned.
Do Not Fall for Deceptive Apps
Demircan warns against spending money on apps claiming to detect hidden cameras. “Given the recent rise in hidden camera incidents, numerous apps have claimed to facilitate detection. Most of these apps are ineffective. Some merely provide results similar to checking with a flashlight. There’s no need to spend money—just use your phone’s flashlight and remain vigilant.”
