It is also not confirmed why only 28 or 29 of 31 evacuated children made it across the border. The news agency AFP reports on 29 children, Reuters on 28. According to Hareetz, it must be because of the health condition of the children. On Sunday, the small children were evacuated from al-Shifa hospital, which is the largest hospital in the Gaza Strip, and transported to the hospital near the Rafah crossing by the UN, the Palestinian Red Crescent and several other aid organisations. The operation was described as extremely dangerous. The World Health Organization called al-Shifa hospital a “dead zone”, as there was not enough water, food, electricity or medical equipment to keep the hospital in operation. Israel claims they have found a 55 meter long tunnel under the hospital which is supposed to belong to Hamas. This is rejected by the hospital management, the Ministry of Health and Hamas itself.
