Eyewitnesses tell the TV station Al Jazeera that the accident happened on the Niger River and that the boat was full of wedding guests who were on their way home to the state of Kwara. According to the Nigerian Tribune newspaper, the victims came from three villages and had attended a wedding in the village of Egboti in the neighboring state of Niger, northwest of the capital Abuja.
