The Birth of PlayStation: A 30-Year Journey

On  September 29, 1995 , the gaming world saw a  transformational shift  as Sony’s PlayStation launched in Europe. This groundbreaking console emerged from a company previously known for  camcorders, Walkman , and  televisions , marking a significant turn in the realm of video games. However, before Sony’s entry into the market, Sega’s Saturn succumbed to a fierce competition that was about to unfold.

The roots of this iconic console trace back to  E3 1995 , the  first Electronic Entertainment Expo . During this pivotal event, a single phrase echoed across the crowded room, delivering one of the most memorable  marketing moments  in gaming history:  “Two Nine Nine,”  a mere announcement of its price that would change the landscape of gaming forever.

Ken Kutaragi: The Father of PlayStation

Before the inception of PlayStation, Sony was far from being a significant player in the world of video games. Most within the company regarded this sector as an afterthought, but not  Ken Kutaragi , affectionately known as the “Father of PlayStation.” His journey began as he observed his daughter playing video games on Nintendo’s NES. This ignited a passion in him to explore the  potential  of the gaming industry. Initially ignored by Sony, Kutaragi did not give up. His big break came when Nintendo sought an audio chip for their Super Nintendo, leading him to create the  SPC700 .

Although Kutaragi faced resistance and frustration within Sony, his persistence eventually led to a collaboration with Nintendo on the  CD-ROM Super Nintendo , often referred to as the  Nintendo PlayStation . This collaborative effort, however, ended poorly when Nintendo opted to partner with Philips instead, sealing the fate of this ambitious project.

Nintendo’s Betrayal and Its Consequences

Nintendo’s decision to collaborate with Philips was a  miscalculation  that would haunt them for years. They handed over five iconic franchises, including  Zelda , to Philips, creating a series of poorly received titles that would tarnish Nintendo’s reputation. This betrayal motivated Kutaragi and Sony to venture into the gaming world on their own, resulting in the creation of the  PlayStation .

When it came time to showcase this new powerhouse, the  1995 E3  provided the perfect platform. While Nintendo focused on its faltering  Virtual Boy , Sony prepared to deliver a knockout punch to its competitors. With the  Sega Saturn  announced at a steep price of  $399 , the stakes were high.

The Legendary E3 Moment

In a scene that has since become legend,  Steve Race , the president of Sony America, ascended the stage. After a brief introduction filled with the usual corporate rhetoric, he announced the PlayStation’s price:  “299.”  And just like that, he exited the stage. This  minimalist approach  culminated in a  roaring applause  from the audience, shifting the spotlight firmly on Sony.

It positioned the PlayStation  $100  cheaper than the Sega Saturn, a fact that would resonate with retailers and gamers across the board. Moreover, thanks to an array of  third-party developer support , the PlayStation offered diverse titles that appealed to not only  Japanese audiences  but Western players as well.

Sega’s Downfall and Sony’s Ascent

Sega’s missteps laid the foundation for Sony’s triumph. The  Sega Saturn’s  complexity made development cumbersome. Unlike the PlayStation, which offered simpler frameworks for developers, Sega’s initiative required coding for two processors, leading to a growing frustration within the development community. With Sony’s strategy and E3 triumph, they clinched the market spotlight.

The impact of PlayStation on a generation

The results were staggering. While Sega sold less than  ten million  Saturn units, the PlayStation surpassed  100 million  units sold. Titles like  Gran Turismo  alone exceeded the total sales of the Saturn. The era of  CD-based gaming  had arrived, eclipsing cartridge systems like those from Nintendo.

This marketing triumph echoed through the years, as history repeated itself when Sony outpaced Microsoft in the  2014 console wars , utilizing similar tactics by announcing a lower price for its  PlayStation 4 . It felt as if the gaming community was witnessing déjà vu.
