Asks Støre to inform the Storting about how the climate targets are to be achieved – news – Climate

The background for the demand is a report that the National Audit Office presented today. There it emerges that the government’s coordination to achieve the Norwegian climate targets is too weak. This is objectionable, says the National Audit Office in the report. – The report shows that Støre has no control over climate policy. The government is criticized for a lack of overall governance and a lack of openness about the uncertainties linked to the question of whether or not we reach the target. It is very serious. Ensuring that we avoid catastrophic climate change is the most important task for politicians today. Both this and previous governments have failed here, says parliamentary leader of the MDG, Lan Marie Berg. – Improvement potential Climate and Environment Minister Andreas Bjelland Eriksen (Ap) admits that the coordination is not good enough. – We coordinate the work through the government’s climate status and plan, “Green Book”, and we are on the right track. We work in a completely different way now than before. It takes time to get this completely in place, but we get better every year, says Eriksen, and adds: – We have a potential for improvement, and we will get better. – Not very concrete The National Audit Office believes that the climate targets are not very concrete and bindingly formulated in each individual ministry. There is a lack of a plan that shows which ministry is responsible for further developing the remedy, and when it will happen. And the work on the further development of remedies is partly not specified. Auditor General Karl Eirik Schjøtt-Pedersen. It is then crucial that the ministries cooperate, that the work is coordinated, and that it is clear what each individual ministry must contribute. Our investigation shows that this coordination is too weak. This increases the risk that Norway will not meet the climate targets, says Auditor General Karl Eirik Schjøtt-Pedersen. The report also points out that it is uncertain to what extent it will be possible to buy, for example, quotas abroad in order to reach the Norwegian climate targets. – Up for grabs – In 2021, Jonas Gahr Støre said that the climate crisis was going to affect his entire work as prime minister. Today, the National Audit Office delivered its harsh verdict: The Støre government lacks a plan for responsibility, follow-up and coordination of the work. Støre has simply not followed through and taken leadership responsibility as he promised in the Storting hall, says Nikolai Astrup, parliamentary representative for Høgre and member of the Storting’s energy and environment committee. Nikolai Astrup, Right. Deputy leader and parliamentary representative for the Liberal Party, Sveinung Rotevatn, says it this way: – It is not surprising that the National Audit Office thinks we are not meeting the climate targets. The government has not come up with new measures to strengthen climate policy. On the contrary, they have made electric cars more expensive, postponed the electrification of ferries and cut important environmental taxes to undermine the effect of the CO2 tax. The WWF World Wildlife Fund also reacts strongly to what emerges in the report. – The government promised to count emissions as they count money, and make climate the framework for all politics. The National Audit Office says their efforts are “worthy of criticism”. It is serious. One of the government’s most important responsibilities is to cut emissions in the face of a global climate crisis, but the implementation is failing, says general secretary Karoline Andaur. Acting leader of Zero, Stig Schjølset says it is serious that the government lacks a plan for which ministry is responsible for the development and introduction of various tools to cut emissions. – It slows down the important climate work at a time when it is increasingly urgent to take action, says Schjølset.
