9 November 2023 at 12:20 Mehl on Ukraine moves: Arrivals have doubled – We must prepare for the fact that many Ukrainians will come to Norway in the future. The same may apply to other asylum seekers, said Minister of Justice Emilie Enger Mehl (Sp) in a statement to the Storting today. She pointed out that the Directorate of Immigration in its latest forecasts for asylum arrivals has estimated that in 2024 there will be 30,000 new displaced persons from Ukraine and 5,000 other asylum seekers in Norway. – The forecasts are very uncertain and the numbers can turn out to be either much higher or much lower, said Mehl. She also mentioned that Norway accepts more refugees from Ukraine than its neighboring countries. – In recent weeks, this trend has intensified. Since mid-August, Norway has received more displaced persons from Ukraine than Sweden, Denmark and Finland combined, she said and continued: – Arrivals in Norway have almost doubled, from a level of 550 arrivals per week in the first half of 2023, to a level of an average of 1,000 arrivals per week since August.
