– We have talked things through a bit, so that is probably the simple answer to that, says Pål Golberg to news. Johannes Høsflot Klæbo wreaked havoc in the world cup in Lahti last weekend, and strengthened his position as the best cross-country skier in the world with three victories on the rap. He does that without being part of the Norwegian cross-country team. Former teammate Pål Golberg therefore believes that Klæbu should be. In November, Golberg told news that neither Johannes Høsflot Klæbo nor Kristine Stavås Skistad should be allowed to compete in the World Cup if they chose to stand outside the national team, due to the regulations of the Ski Association. – Want the best on the team The regulations state that runners who decline a place in the national team should not be selected to represent the Ski Association for the current season, unless there are special circumstances. But Klæbo, who, among other things, wanted to carry out a different assembly plan than the rest of the national team, eventually landed a representation agreement with the association to be able to participate in the World Cup. The association believed that the desire for its own collection scheme was a “special circumstance”. The same applied to Stavås Skistad and Astrid Øyre Slind. Something Golberg disagreed with. WANTS KLÆBO BACK: Pål Golberg has, as announced, spoken to Klæbo. He points out that he also understands Klæbo’s side of the story. Photo: Terje Pedersen / NTB – I do not agree that it is a special exception, Golberg told news in November. Furthermore, Golberg announced that he wished to talk to Klæbo during the season. There, the hope was to get the Trønder to see the value of a national team environment. When news meets Golberg and Klæbo in connection with the World Cup competitions in Lahti, Golberg confirms that it is still his wish. – Yes, I told him that. It is not to put pressure on him here and now. We want the best in the team. It applies to Johannes (Klæbo). There is also Kristine (Stavås Skistad) and Astrid (Øyre Slind), so there will be interesting weeks and months, says Golberg to news. Opening up for national team return The end of the conflict with the Ski Association and Klæbo before the season was, as mentioned, a standard representation agreement. Which meant that Klæbo was going to be treated equally with all runners who had not been selected for the national team with a view to race participation – but with commercial freedom between each World Cup weekend. After talks with Golberg, Klæbo left the door open to return to the national team when spring comes. – That option is there, of course, says Klæbo to news. He continues: – It has been a process. We will also use the time well in the coming period, with a focus on skiing of course, but try to be a little better out in good time this year, and try to have a little better plan for what happens now in the coming weeks and months. IN THE THINKING BOX: Johannes Høsflot Klæbo will soon decide whether he wants to return to the national team. Photo: Terje Pedersen / NTB – Have you gained a better understanding of what happened to Golberg in the media before the season? – I fully understand what Pål means. I think the same also applies to the other road. It’s really just a matter of finding a way together, which ensures that you go in the right direction, emphasizes Klæbo. Preoccupied with the future of cross-country skiing At the same time, Golberg has gained a greater understanding of Klæbo’s choice, but points out that he wants the best for cross-country skiing in the future. Then both Klæbo, Stavås Skistad and Øyre Slind should be in the national team, he underlines. – I am concerned about the way forward. There will also be a national team and a world cup in cross-country skiing in the future, so it’s about finding out how to get ahead, he says. Astrid Øyre Slind tells news that she is unsure. She thrives at Team Aker Dæhlie, where she is encouraged daily by trainer Chris Jespersen. UNSURE: Both Kristine Stavås Skistad and Astrid Øyre Slind are unsure whether they want to be on the national team. Photo: NTB – I’ve gotten good at it, so it will take a lot for me to get rid of it. But I have to make an assessment on that, of course, she points out. Skistad also points out that she is in the thinking box. – I feel very comfortable with the others, so we’ll see, she says to news. – What will it take to persuade you? – We’ll see, repeats Skistad.
