Cristal Palace FC Welcomes Woody Johnson as New Co-Owner

Crystal Palace FC announced on Thursday that American businessman  Woody Johnson , co-owner of the NFL team New York Jets, has successfully completed his purchase of a significant stake in the club. This acquisition allows him to join President  Steve Parish , along with fellow owners  Josh Harris  and  David Blitzer , as a partner and director.

In an official statement published on the club’s website, Johnson expressed his enthusiasm for joining Crystal Palace: “It is a  privilege  and an  honor  for me to become part of the ownership group of Crystal Palace.” He further stated his admiration for the club during his tenure as the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom and highlighted the  intense loyalty and passion  of the club’s fans.

“Crystal Palace has a rich history and an important connection to English football in southern London, which I came to respect during my time in the UK,” explained Johnson. His commitment to fan engagement is evident: “I am eager to meet the supporters who have shown unwavering dedication. I respect Steve Parish greatly and look forward to working with him and the ownership group to capitalize on the club’s recent successes and foster a  promising future  for the Palace,” he added.

Parish echoed Johnson’s sentiments, calling this an  exciting moment  for the club. He stated, “We anticipate growing our historic recent success together,” referencing the recent FA Cup triumph, which occurred on  May 17  at Wembley Stadium. The victory marked the club’s first major trophy, securing the future and ambitions of the squad.

Despite this achievement, controversy loomed as UEFA recently decided to reclassify Crystal Palace’s entry into  European competitions . Initially, the club qualified for the Europa League 2025/26 following their cup victory. However, UEFA enforced regulations that limited participation due to the overlapping ownership interests involving  John Textor , another co-owner with interests in both Crystal Palace and  Olympique de Lyon . The UEFA Financial Control Committee ruled that only one of the clubs could compete in European tournaments, favoring Lyon’s superior position in Ligue 1.

As a consequence of this ruling, Crystal Palace was relegated to the Conference League after failing to meet UEFA’s compliance deadline regarding Textor’s dual ownership. The club has since appealed the decision to the  Sporting Arbitration Court  (TAS), arguing that Textor has already agreed to divest his stake in Crystal Palace and has stepped down from his position at Olympique de Lyon.

This situation underlines the  tenuous balance  that club owners must maintain when navigating the complexities of international football regulations. As business dynamics shift, the club must ensure it aligns itself with UEFA’s guidelines to remain competitive in continental competitions.

On a brighter note, the addition of Woody Johnson may energize the club, bringing new perspectives and investments to help solidify their place in the football hierarchy. Crystal Palace has experienced an upward trajectory, and with a figure of Johnson’s stature in the mix, the aspirations for further achievements could soar. Johnson’s deep ties to the sports world, combined with a fresh vision for community engagement, may pave the way for exciting developments.

In summary, the arrival of Woody Johnson as a co-owner has created a renewed sense of hope for Crystal Palace FC. The club’s management will now focus on enhancing their commercial and competitive presence while addressing current challenges posed by UEFA. With dedicated fans, a rich history, and a strategic plan under new ownership, the future for Crystal Palace looks promising.
