On Wednesday, June 1, it became known that actress Amber Heard lost the trial against her ex-husband Johnny Depp. Well, Heard has asked for the verdict to be dismissed. The actress’s lawyer, Elaine Bredehoft, has signed the application which the website Deadline has published for the public. A key point in the application is a wish that the jury must be examined and that there is reason to cast doubt on one of the jury members in particular. It is claimed that one of the persons on the jury was stated to have been born in 1945, but in reality was born in 1970. It is therefore unclear whether this jury member was ever summoned for jury duty, according to the documents. In the application, she asks that the entire verdict be set aside – but that a completely new trial may be an alternative. In order to succeed in an appeal, Heard must convince the appellate court that the judge – Penney Azcarate – made a gross mistake and deliberately avoided important evidence and in that case may have influenced the outcome of the case. Should there be a new lawsuit, the question is whether it will be as popular as the previous one. Enormous attention During the previous trial, things went hot in the courtroom, social media and traditional media. Figures from Retriever show that the case has led to an unusual number of articles in the Norwegian media. As many as 646 postings have since the start of the case on 11 April mentioned the settlement between Depp and Heard. Dagbladet and VG top the list, with around 50 articles each. While the trial was going on, the Norwegian media wrote about it every single day. Coverage peaked the day the verdict was handed down. At that time, Norwegian newspapers produced a total of 145 articles about the trial, which ended in victory for Depp. It is rare for a Hollywood case to get so much attention in the Norwegian media, says Svein Tore Bergestuen. Together with Eva Sannum, he runs the podcast Tut & Mediekjør, where the two discuss editorial decisions. Fans after the verdict in the trial between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard became known. Bergestuen believes that the traditional media surf the flow of attention in social media. He does not think the Norwegian media would be as interested in the case if it were not for the fact that it flared up on TikTok. – This is an interplay that we have not seen before, at least not as dramatic and large as we see in this particular case, Bergestuen says. #Justiceforjohnny trends in Norway The case set TikTok on fire, also among Norwegian users. And the overwhelming majority seem to show their support for Johnny Depp. Topics such as #womenlietoo and #justiceforjohnnydepp are frequently used by Norwegian TikTok users, the Retriever figures show. TikTok snippets tagged with #justiceforjohnnydepp have a total of almost 21 billion plays globally. In comparison, videos marking their support for Heard have “only” been played more than 92 million times. A similar pattern emerges on Instagram. Here are close to half a million, 416,000, posts tagged with topics that show support for Johnny Depp. Amber Heard, on the other hand, only receives support in 11,300 posts. Do we have an urge to choose side? Colored by TikTok In front of the Opera in Oslo, news meets Selma Nasby (19), Astrid Dyrstad (18) and Helene Næss (18). All three have followed the case through social media. On the mobile screen, they show a TikTok video where Rihanna’s “Take A Bow” plays over a photo collage of Amber Heard in the trial. Rihanna sings “you look so dumb right now” and the girls giggle. – There is a lot of Johnny Depp’s side that comes out. That is sort of what has become the angle, says Nasby. TikTok has influenced how Helene Næss (left), Astrid Dyrstad and Selma Nasby perceive Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. Photo: William Jobling / news Only four swipes further on TikTok so the next video about the trial pops up. – He is seen as innocent, while Amber Heard is portrayed as a liar, Dyrstad adds. The three admit that the tone of TikTok has colored how they themselves perceive the trial. – I personally think that it seems as if he is right, because that is what we get to see, says Næss. Dyrstad agrees: – He has done things he too, but it does not come out. So if you do not know anything about the case, it seems that Amber Heard is just the only one who has done something. Nostalgia and algorithms Thomas Wolfgang Schubert is Professor of Social Psychology at the University of Oslo (UiO). He thinks Johnny Depp has garnered massive support because he already has a high fan base. – Many have nostalgic memories of Depp as Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the Caribbean” and other family movies. He also points out that the TikTok algorithm is designed to give you more of the content you spend the most time on. He warns against explaining the Depp favoritism with group mentality alone. – This case is not only an example of psychology, but also a result of content production and how algorithms work, says Schubert. Supports Depp Since the verdict, several well-known profiles have shared their thoughts on it. One who has been involved here at home is artist and TV profile Mia Gundersen. In a video posted on TikTok, she gives her full support to Johnny Depp. – First of all, I just want to say that I am happy that it turns out that men can also be victims of women, Gundersen says in the clip. The video has so far received just over 13,000 likes. – For me, it is about justice that he won, Gundersen explains to news. She says that she gets involved in the case because it ripped up old wounds. She agrees with the TikTok majority who think Heard is a liar. Justice prevailed when Johnny Depp won the trial, Mia Gundersen believes. She is among several famous people who have commented on the trial on TikTok. Photo: William Jobling / news – I myself have been in this type of relationship. I think it was time that we see that there is a bias in such conditions. It’s not both’s to blame. Insight into the private Bergestuen from Tut & Mediekjør thinks it is natural that the case has received a lot of attention. – Conflict is one of the most important drivers in all storytelling, and in addition you can identify with it even if they are super celebrities. It’s about a love story that has gone completely unnoticed. The sky-high level of conflict is an important driver in all storytelling, says Svein Tore Bergestuen. Photo: Private The fact that the judge chose to keep the trial open has also been of great importance. By letting the world follow the trial, you can be left with a feeling that you get an insight into something very private and secret. – With the accessibility and images that we often do not see, means that this takes off completely, says Bergestuen. Depp to court again The visits to the courtroom are not over for Johnny Depp anyway. In just over a month, the trial between Depp and Gregory Brooks, who sued the actor already in 2018. Brooks was location manager during the filming of the film City of Lies, a dramatization of the investigation into the murder of the world-famous rapper Notorious BIG Depp was the main character. Actor Johnny Depp is due to appear in court in Los Angeles on July 25. The background is a lawsuit from 2018, where Gregory Brooks accuses Depp of attacking him during the filming of City of Lies, where they both worked. Photo: Evelyn Hockstein / AP According to the lawsuit, a fight has developed between Brooks and Depp after Brooks forwarded a message to Depp that they were soon out of time to film. According to Entertainment Today, Brooks claims that Depp attacked him and that his spirit smelled of alcohol. In addition, Depp is said to have offered Brooks $ 100,000 to hit him in the face. Apparently, security guards were needed to pull Depp out of the heat of battle. Depp himself believes that he acted in self-defense. Camille Vasquez, who defended the actress during the trial against her ex-wife Heard, will again be the actress’ defender during the trial, which kicks off on July 25 in Los Angeles.
