The General Directorate of the Observatory of Threats and Natural Resources of El Salvador has issued a warning regarding imminent meteorological changes. Residents along the Salvadoran coast can expect unusually high and fast waves, reaching speeds of up to 55 kilometers per hour and heights of 1.50 meters. This alarming phenomenon is being attributed to extratropical storms originating off Antarctica, leading to dangerous sea conditions for locals, tourists, and marine workers.
Forecast and Risk Factors
In a detailed report from the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources (MARN), the combination of high waves and spring tides is anticipated to result in beach flooding and the potential capsizing of boats. At low tide, the risks of drowning and damage to moorings in ports significantly increase.
Predicted Wave Heights and Speeds
The coastal areas are set to experience wave speeds considerably exceeding typical values, which average around 35 kilometers per hour and 1.5 meters in height. In the upcoming days, wave speeds may reach 65 kilometers per hour with wave heights varying from 1.3 to 1.9 meters in key beach zones including Punta Remedios, Punta Roca, and Jiquilisco Bay.
On specific days:
- March 13: 40 km/h, 1.5m at Punta Remedios; 1.3m in nearby estuaries.
- March 14: Heights reaching 1.5m, with speeds soaring to 65 km/h.
- March 15: Peaks of 1.9m and speeds of 60 km/h expected.
Precautionary Measures and Safety Recommendations
Authorities have urged extreme caution in light of the expected climatic events. Increased underwater currents and larger waves pose serious threats to bathers and fishermen. The General Directorate of Civil Protection will enhance its surveillance efforts along the coast, maintaining a visible presence at 170 different points, including multiple beaches.
Fermin Perez, the deputy director of Civil Protection, emphasizes the importance of adhering to official recommendations during this climatic episode, stating, “We call on fishermen and tourists to take appropriate measures against this phenomenon.”
The Lifeguard Unit has reiterated the necessity of remaining vigilant, especially if wave conditions approach or surpass the predicted thresholds. The general public is advised to stay informed and heed the warnings from local authorities to ensure safety during this challenging time.
