A Ukrainian delegation arrived in Istanbul, Turkey on Friday for talks on opening grain exports from the country through the Black Sea. Just a few hours later, the agreement was signed, says UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was also present during the negotiations. – The agreement will benefit countries on the brink of bankruptcy and vulnerable people who are starving, Guterres said during the ceremony. Russia and Ukraine signed separate but identical agreements with the UN and Turkey. It will also improve Russia’s ability to export grain and fertiliser. The world market is struggling with both a lack of grain and very high food prices. The aim of the agreement is thus to mitigate the global food crisis that has arisen in the wake of Russia’s war in Ukraine. Turkey stands as guarantor. They will help control the Ukrainian and Russian ships that pass through the Bosphorus Strait. The silos around the country are almost full, and Ukrainian farmers do not know what to do with new crops. – There is no place to store it and no one to sell it to, says farmer Rakhmon Mirzojev, who runs a farm 60 kilometers from the front line in southern Ukraine. Good weather has meant that the grain season is better than usual, but for Mirzojev it only means that even more grain is piling up. In Ukraine, prices are also rock bottom since the supply is far greater than the demand.
