22 December 2023 at 18:09 Agreement in the Security Council on Gaza aid. The US vetoed the Russian proposal. Reuters reports. The UN Security Council did not agree on a resolution demanding a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza. A heavily diluted version of the original resolution proposal was adopted on Friday evening Norwegian time, after several postponements earlier in the week. The resolution is content to “call for urgent steps to immediately allow safe, unimpeded and expanded humanitarian access and to create the conditions for a sustainable cessation of hostilities”. The resolution does not deprive Israel of control over emergency aid brought into the Gaza Strip from Egypt or via Israel. In the original draft of the resolution, which was penned by the United Arab Emirates, it was proposed to give the UN control over the emergency aid shipments. The United States and Russia abstained from voting on Friday’s resolution, but neither used their veto power in the Security Council. Russia abstained from voting because, in their eyes, the resolution does not go far enough in demanding a halt to hostilities. The US, for its part, vetoed a Russian proposal for a resolution demanding a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza.
