Agder Court of Appeal cancels the compensation judgment against Birgitte Tengs’ cousin – news Rogaland – Local news, TV and radio

For 25 years, the cousin and his family have fought for a complete acquittal and cleansing. Today, the compensation judgment was finally annulled by the Agder Court of Appeal. – I am extremely satisfied with what has happened, but it did not come as a surprise, says Jakob, the cousin’s father. The cousin was convicted in 1997 for the murder of Birgitte Tengs. The following year, he was acquitted in the Gulating Court of Appeal, but still sentenced to pay NOK 100,000 in compensation to Birgitte’s parents. It is this judgment that the Agder Court of Appeal has now annulled. – Now we have to try to put everything behind us and look forward. It’s good to get it away, says the father. Although they are very happy, I don’t think it came as a shock to his son. I think he’s taking this pretty easy. As I said, it didn’t come as a surprise, says Jakob. The cousin’s lawyer, Arvid Sjødin, has since 2001 petitioned for the compensation judgment to be reopened a number of times. Sjødin submitted a new petition last autumn when another Karmøy man was charged with the murder. – The Court of Appeal has finally decided on the case after one year, says Sjødin.
