A record number of teenage boys are given ADHD medication – Latest news – news

One in twenty boys in Norway between the ages of 13 and 17 now receives medication for ADHD. The use of ADHD medication among boys in this age group has increased by 175 per cent from 2004 to 2023, according to figures from the Medicines Register at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. This is what FHI writes in a press release. In 2004, around 2 per cent of boys between the ages of 13 and 17 received medication for ADHD. In 2023, it was 5.5 per cent, the figures show. – We see that there has been a sharp increase over several years now, says Heidi Aase, department director for children’s health and development at the Institute of Public Health. Aase believes there could be several reasons why there has been a sharp increase. – As of now, we cannot know whether there is an increased incidence of ADHD, or whether there is an increased awareness. What we do know is that the capacity and competence regarding the diagnosis has improved. Aase also highlights social media as a possible reason, and the fact that there has been more focus on ADHD there as well.
