“Yes baby, yes!”, Brad Carver, chairman of the Republican Party in Atlanta, shouted to news last night. He has good reason to be happy. At the time of writing, everything points in the direction of a clear victory for Donald Trump, who with it appears to be making one of the biggest political comebacks in history. It is a unique case in American history. The storming of Congress on January 6, 2020 seems to have been forgotten by a majority of American voters. Nor have they cared about accusations of fascism from key associates of Trump’s previous administration, a series of lawsuits or open racism at his latest rally. Can win everything They instead seem to have given Trump a clear, indeed almost overwhelming, mandate to rule the country for the next four years. Because not only are they likely to win the presidency. It is also well placed to win Congress, and will thus have a free hand to govern the country in the years to come. It is also possible that they get the most votes in total. Trump has increased his support across the US, but particularly among minority voters. Americans know who they elected, what they get and what they want. American voters have gone to the polls and made their own decisions. They want Trump, as it stands now. It is a merciless judgment on sitting President Joe Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and the politics of the Democrats. It has not been about their election campaign organization or their financing. The Democrats have had both the money and the apparatus. The voters have rejected the party and its policies clearly and distinctly. Incumbent President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris are likely to receive a harsh verdict from the voters.¨ Photo: BRENDAN SMIALOWSKI / AFP The consequences of this are difficult to foresee. Last time, in 2016, he won surprisingly. He was a TV celebrity, but politically inexperienced and the Americans did not know much about what he actually stood for. Nor did he have people around him with management experience. All this is different now. He and his people have been preparing this political comeback for several years. What happens to NATO? In future, they will have all the tools in the American state apparatus to carry out the policy they want. The economy and immigration have been at the top of that list throughout the election campaign. It is not going to be easy to be an illegal immigrant in the United States, and the opportunities to enter legally will probably also be limited. Trump has promised to deport millions of people without legal residence in the United States. The world must prepare for American protectionism and high tariff barriers. It is a consistent feature of Trump’s understanding of international economics. Donald Trump at a campaign event in Pennsylvania on November 4. It is also uncertain how things will go with NATO and other alliances with Trump as supreme leader in the USA. It may go well, albeit with a lot of noise like last time, but we cannot rule out that much of the cooperation breaks down, with the consequences it has for European security. Says he wants to solve the Ukraine war He has said he will solve the Ukraine war in a short time. Ukraine is dependent on US arms aid. It can hardly mean anything other than that Ukraine must give up land to Russia, and will be left with a Rest of Ukraine and an uncertain future. We must also expect that right-wing populism around the world and especially in Europe will gain more power. Much in international politics can be resolved through negotiations, and a balance of power is usually found eventually. But a question I myself am sitting here in the morning hours after following the count, is what long-term consequences this will have for democracy, in the United States and the rest of the world. Maybe he was joking, maybe not Trump’s vocabulary has been darker than ever in this election campaign. He has indicated that he will use military force against his opponents or “internal enemies”. He has said he thinks it is okay if journalists are killed. Maybe he was joking about the last one, maybe not. Presidential candidate Donald Trump Trump talked about how he would not mind journalists being shot. Was it a joke? I guess only Trump himself knows what he really wants to do. Unless there is a surprise in the final sprint, he will be the new president of the United States. Trump’s supporters are celebrating today, but many, both in the United States and the rest of the world, are afraid of what now lies ahead. Published 06.11.2024, at 08.07
