Emotional Opening for Liverpool: Anfield Pays Tribute to Diogo Jota

Liverpool experienced a deeply emotional day at Anfield this Friday as they kicked off the 2025/26 season of the Premier League against Bournemouth. This match was particularly poignant because it marked the first official game following the tragic loss of striker Diogo Jota. In a spirited display, the Reds ultimately triumphed with a score of 4-2.

Although the formal season began for the Reds last weekend with a disappointing defeat against Crystal Palace in the Community Shield at Wembley, this match was their first home game. Consequently, an emotional tribute was organized to honor the memory of the Portuguese footballer.

As the match began, fans around the stadium united in a heartfelt rendition of “You’ll Never Walk Alone.” A minute of silence ensued, marking a truly touching moment where decorations were laid out in the stands to honor both Jota and his late brother, André Silva.

Diogo Jota tragically lost his life on July 3 in a car accident, along with his brother André Teixeira da Silva. They were traveling from Portugal to Spain to board a ship that would take them to England for the preseason with the Reds. Just days before the incident, the 28-year-old striker had married his long-time girlfriend, Rute Cardoso.

In the wake of his untimely death, Liverpool has decided to retire the number 20 jersey that Jota wore. Additionally, the club pledged to provide financial support to his family. Reports indicate that Chelsea will also donate a portion of their Club World Cup prize money to Cardoso and their children as a gesture of support.

Fans have created a sanctuary near the stadium in Jota’s memory. Following his tragic passing, Jota’s wife visited the site, which has since become a stop for numerous football figures, including Argentine star Paulo Dybala, who paid their respects.

We know that it will be a very emotional occasion, since it is the first league game we played since we lost Diogo and André. The tributes that have been given throughout the world of football, and especially in the LFC community, have really been special, and I know that tonight we will come together to honor them once more. I think that Diogo’s wife, his children, and family will be present, and it is important that, as a club, we show them that they will always have our love and support while facing this tragic situation. We will always be there for them,” stated head coach Arne Slot prior to the match.

Liverpool faced Bournemouth in the opening game of the new Premier League season. With Argentine Alexis Mac Allister starting, while Marcos Senesi was on the field for the visitors, the Reds aimed to defend their title after being the only team in the last eight years to break Manchester City’s dominance.

Liverpool ultimately claimed a resounding 4-2 victory. Mac Allister played a pivotal role, assisting Hugo Ekitike for the match’s first goal. Ekitike celebrated by showing the number 20 with his fingers in honor of Jota. Other goals came from Cody Gakpo, Federico Chiesa, and Mohamed Salah, while Antoine Semenyo scored a brace for Bournemouth.

The Premier League’s opening weekend will also feature Aston Villa led by Emiliano Martínez facing Newcastle, Tottenham with Cuti Romero taking on Burnley, and Manchester City visiting Wolverhampton. Additionally, Chelsea, showcasing Enzo Fernández, will go against Crystal Palace where Walter Benítez is in goal.
