Tragic Incident at Montevideo’s Rodó Park: A Child’s Fall
A two-year-old boy went to play at Rodó Park, a bustling area in Montevideo, Uruguay, which features a small amusement park. On a Saturday afternoon, both the child and his 67-year-old father boarded the ride known as “Buzza Gasanito,” one of the park’s attractions located along the Rambla Costanera, adjacent to the Río de la Plata. Unfortunately, the minor managed to detach from security protocols and was launched from the ride.
Upon realizing that his son had fallen, the father detached himself from the safety measures and jumped to rescue him. Tragically, both sustained serious injuries, with the child suffering a skull fracture that necessitated admission to intensive therapy.
The incident has resulted in the temporary closure of this ride and has spurred an investigation by the Prosecutor’s Office to ascertain responsibility for the accident.
Eyewitness Accounts and Immediate Reactions
Axel, an operator at Rodó Park for 19 years, was present during the incident but was tending to another ride at the time. He recounted, “When I arrived at the ride, the rumor was that a child had fallen. The father seemed to have also neglected safety regulations and, in a panic, leaped to try and save him.” Axel noted that, by the time he reached the scene, the worst had already occurred.
Safety Measures and Regulations Ignored
Eyewitnesses expressed their concern as chaos ensued. Many attempted to assist but unfortunately contributed to the confusion. Axel commented, “People gathered without knowing what to do, which ultimately complicated the situation rather than helping.”
According to him, prior to the ride’s operation, the father had been warned that his son should not be in the ride while standing but should sit instead. However, during the ride, the father placed the child on his lap, ignoring safety protocols.
Axel further explained that the ride employed “a unique braking system.” He clarified, “It does not have another type of emergency stop system. Unlike other rides, such as traditional roller coasters that feature multiple stopping points, this attraction operates on a singular stop mechanism.”
The ride is equipped with a dual safety system: a safety belt and a restraining bar. Axel opined that it was improbable for both systems to have malfunctioned simultaneously.
Medical staff attended to the victims promptly. Nurse Alejandro Montero recalled the intense moments, stating it was, “all shock.” He had to stabilize the father first, due to his injuries, while assessing the condition of the child.
Montero reported that no one, including ride operators and patrons, noticed the child’s fall initially, and the father’s desperate cries for help were misunderstood by onlookers. Witnesses described his behavior as erratic, believing he might have suffered a psychotic episode.
The management of the amusement park asserted that standard safety measures were not adhered to during the incident. Reports indicate that the father, who had taken three other children to the park, had neglected to secure the safety bar and belt. The company even presented surveillance footage purportedly showing this to corroborate their claims.
This tragic incident highlights the importance of adhering to safety protocols in amusement parks to prevent accidents and protect the wellbeing of children. Families visiting such attractions must remain vigilant about the safety regulations established to safeguard their loved ones.
